Luke Littler has announced his decision to manage his own career after parting ways with ZXF Sports Management just before the World Grand Prix. Following his impressive 2-0 victory over Gian van Veen in the opening round of the tournament in Leicester, Littler confirmed that he will now take control of his professional journey, with support from family and Garry Plummer at Target Darts.
Littler, the reigning world and World Matchplay champion and the 2023 Premier League winner, had been with his previous management group, headed by Martin Foulds, since he was 13 years old. He expressed that the timing for the change felt right, stating, “I’m on my own. Just as myself, I think it’s better.”
In a brief address to reporters, Littler emphasized the importance of self-management, stating that he will handle logistics such as booking flights and hotels while receiving guidance from Plummer. “It’s going to be massive; we’re going in the right direction,” he added, reflecting on the support structure he has put in place.
While Littler did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure from ZXF, he indicated that it was a mutual decision. “No one knows what’s been going on behind the scenes. And I won’t be saying anything, but it was just the right time,” he noted.
Impressive Start at the World Grand Prix
Littler’s performance against Van Veen showcased his skill, featuring finishes of 151 and a match-clinching 144. Remarkably, despite his loss, Van Veen recorded the highest average in World Grand Prix history with a score of 106.47, narrowly surpassing the previous record of 106.45 set by Alan Warriner-Little in 2001. Littler maintained an average of 105.58 during the match.
Reflecting on his performance, Littler expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, “I can definitely do some damage. Obviously that performance shows it.” He reminded himself and the audience that it was only the first round, emphasizing the need to focus on each match as it comes. “It’s one of the major titles that’s missing for me, and it’s definitely not the easiest,” he said.
High Praise for Gian van Veen
Following his victory, Littler praised Van Veen, suggesting that the world No. 15 has the potential to join the Premier League in the near future and even win a major title. “Gian played his part, but that second set, I was a bit too much for him,” Littler explained. He acknowledged Van Veen’s talent, indicating that if the Dutch player continues to perform well in upcoming tournaments, he could secure a spot in the prestigious league.
Littler’s admiration for his opponent extended beyond this match, as he noted, “It wouldn’t surprise me if these two [Gian and Josh Rock] won a major in the next few months or next few years. They are incredible.”
As the World Grand Prix continues, fans can catch the action live on Sky Sports and stream various sports, including darts, football, golf, and cricket, with NOW. The tournament promises to deliver thrilling matches leading up to the final on Sunday.
