Moses Itauma Aims for Heavyweight Glory in Dillian Whyte Showdown

British boxer Moses Itauma is set to face veteran fighter Dillian Whyte on March 16, 2024, in Riyadh, marking the most significant challenge of his young career. Itauma, a southpaw from Chatham, is eager to secure his 14th consecutive victory, which would bolster his aspirations for a world title shot in 2026.
As he prepares for this pivotal bout, Itauma expresses unwavering confidence in his future, stating he believes he will one day become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. “I do believe that one day in the near future I will be an undisputed world champion, yes,” he stated. While he does not expect to claim all the heavyweight belts within the next year, he remains optimistic about his long-term prospects.
Facing a Tough Opponent
Itauma acknowledges the significance of fighting Whyte, who has had a storied boxing career, including a notable match against Anthony Joshua in 2015. Despite Whyte’s defeat in that encounter, Itauma insists that facing him at such a young age is a considerable achievement. “It is a big deal to take him on so young,” he remarked, noting the mutual respect he holds for the seasoned fighter.
The 20-year-old boxer is keenly aware of the challenges that lie ahead. “I don’t think I’d lose anything from fighting Usyk,” Itauma reflected, referencing current champion Oleksandr Usyk. He emphasizes that he approaches every fight with the mindset of winning, stating, “If I win, ‘wahey’, if I lose, I don’t think there’s any wrongdoings from that, but I don’t ever think I’m going to go into a fight and lose.”
Aiming for History
Itauma’s ambitions extend beyond Saturday’s fight. He recently missed out on becoming the youngest world heavyweight champion after surpassing Mike Tyson‘s age record. He has set his sights on Floyd Patterson, who held the title at 21 years and 10 months, as he aims to join the ranks of boxing legends. “That is four years from now for me, and I believe I can be heavyweight champion before that,” Itauma stated confidently.
He acknowledges the legacy of past champions, expressing a desire to be remembered alongside the greats. “I definitely recognise Usyk as a modern-day great, but I also want to be a modern-day great,” he said, demonstrating both respect for established fighters and determination to carve his own path in the sport.
As the fight draws near, Itauma remains focused and resolute. He understands the importance of maintaining a clear mindset, especially when facing an opponent he once admired from afar. “I need to be locked in,” he emphasized, showcasing his commitment to the task at hand.
With a combination of talent, ambition, and a strategic approach, Moses Itauma is poised to make a significant impact in the heavyweight boxing landscape, starting with a crucial fight against Dillian Whyte. The outcome may well shape his journey toward the championship dreams he holds so dearly.
