Tuchel Plans Bellingham Talks After England World Cup Omission

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed plans to engage with midfielder Jude Bellingham following his notable absence from England’s recent matches that secured their qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Bellingham was not included in the squad during a friendly and subsequent qualification match as he continues his recovery from shoulder surgery, where he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes.
Despite his absence, Tuchel emphasized that Bellingham remains a vital member of the team. The coach expressed his intention to reach out to the player before England’s upcoming matches in November against Italy and Ukraine. He stated, “I guess so. Why not? Of course, he’s an important player, he’s a big player.”
Tuchel’s Assurance and Future Engagement
In light of Bellingham’s exclusion, Tuchel plans to communicate with several players, particularly those who were not included in the camp. He believes it is crucial to maintain contact with these athletes, noting that “these guys who are now here, they have the reward and they feel the reward.” He reassured that no player has been punished for their absence, insisting that his decisions are based on performance and readiness.
“No one has done anything wrong. It’s not a punishment or whatever,” Tuchel added, emphasizing the eagerness among players to return to the squad. He acknowledged that several other talented players, including those who are currently injured, also deserve recognition and a chance to contribute.
Tuchel’s comments come after a recent controversy where he had to clarify a statement about Bellingham, which he mistakenly described as “repulsive.” He has since asserted that there are no underlying issues between him and Bellingham, indicating that he believes the midfielder will embrace his coaching methods if recalled.
Acknowledging Absentees and Future Prospects
Reflecting on the depth of talent available to England, Tuchel remarked, “I trust in more players than [are] here.” He underscored the importance of performance and readiness, stating, “If we invite them, then we are sure that they will buy in. Otherwise, we will not invite them. Why would we? This is a non-negotiable.”
With Bellingham’s potential return on the horizon, Tuchel remains optimistic. He noted, “There are a lot of guys out there who would deserve to be with us and who are hungry and determined to be with us.” This positive outlook highlights the competitive nature of the squad as they prepare for crucial matches in the months to come.
