Belfast City Council Spends Over £11,000 on New Bin Tagging System

Belfast City Council has implemented a new bin tagging system aimed at improving waste management across the city. The initiative, introduced in early August, is designed to encourage residents to properly use their bins, thereby preventing overflows and enhancing safety for waste collection crews.
The council’s recent rollout of the bin tagging system has already incurred costs exceeding £11,600. A Freedom of Information request from Belfast Live revealed that from August 4, 2025, any bins that do not close fully or are lined with plastic will receive an amber tag as a warning. The tags are intended to inform residents about the necessary steps to ensure their bins are ready for collection on designated days.
In the first week of the new system, approximately 1,700 tags were attached to bins that were overfilled or improperly lined. The council stated that the amber tags would provide guidance on how to make more room in bins and prepare them for collection.
Belfast City Council has indicated that bins that continue to be presented as overflowing or that use liners will eventually receive red tags. These red-tagged bins will not be emptied, starting from September 29, 2025. This timeline allows residents ample opportunity to adapt to the new guidelines.
Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the council’s People and Communities Committee, emphasized that the changes aim to assist residents in recycling more effectively and managing household waste. She noted that many other councils have already adopted similar practices.
Brooks pointed out, “Our crews have always endeavored to support households on collection day, but a consistent approach is necessary for how bins are presented and emptied across the city.” She added that this initiative would not only enhance safety for collection crews but also align with forthcoming changes in the operational methods of waste collection vehicles.
The council has stressed the importance of these guidelines in fostering a cleaner environment. By adhering to the new bin management rules, residents can contribute positively to waste management efforts and support the vital services provided by the council.
Belfast City Council continues to encourage community cooperation and adherence to these new guidelines, ensuring that waste collection remains efficient and safe for everyone involved. For more updates on local news and initiatives, residents are invited to visit the Belfast Live homepage.
