Eden Court Launches Film Season Exploring Freedom and Resistance

Eden Court in Inverness is hosting a thought-provoking film season titled Cinema Against Fascism, which aims to explore the concept of freedom during a time of escalating hate and authoritarianism. Running from September to November, this season features a diverse selection of classic films and contemporary documentaries that delve into themes of resistance, identity, migration, and justice.
Among the highlights are films that depict the rise of fascism in Italy, narratives set in 1930s Berlin, and documentaries examining the militarization of youth. Each screening will be complemented by guest speakers and panel discussions, providing audiences with opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations about these critical issues.
This initiative is part of the nationwide programme Our Freedom: Then and Now, which commemorates 80 years since the end of World War II, specifically the anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day. The programme is supported by Arts Council England and aims to foster a deeper understanding of freedom in contemporary society.
In addition to the film showings, Eden Court has issued an open call for poets from the Highlands to reflect on the question: “What does freedom mean to you?” Selected poets will have the chance to create and perform a commissioned piece while collaborating on a curated film screening.
Susannah Armitage, senior producer at Eden Court, expressed the intention behind this creative pairing: “By pairing poetry to this timely cinema season, we hope to create a powerful moment that connects Highland voices with global conversations.”
The head of film at Eden Court, Paul MacDonald-Taylor, emphasized the importance of voices in this season: “This is a season about voices — the ones silenced and the ones rising. We want to honour both the past and the people shaping a freer future.”
For those interested in attending the screenings or participating in the poetry project, further details, including the full programme and guidelines for submissions, are available on the Eden Court website. This season not only highlights significant historical themes but also invites active participation from the community, encouraging a dialogue about freedom that resonates across generations.
