Eluned Morgan Reflects on First Year as Welsh First Minister

Eluned Morgan has marked her first year as the First Minister of Wales on August 6, 2023, highlighting her commitment to fulfilling the promises made to the people of Wales. Since taking office, Morgan has emphasized the importance of listening, learning, and delivering on key priorities that resonate with the citizens.
In a statement on social media, Morgan reflected on the past year, stating, “One year ago, I became your First Minister, and I made a promise to listen, to learn and to deliver on the things that matter most to you.” She specified four critical areas of focus: health, jobs, homes, and transport, which she claims require immediate action rather than mere words.
Key Achievements in Health and Employment
Under Morgan’s leadership, the Welsh Government has made significant investments in the NHS, with the number of individuals waiting over two years for treatment reduced by more than half within the last year. The establishment of Women’s Health Hubs is set to be completed in every health board area by spring 2024. Additionally, the government has collaborated with unions and employers to enhance pay and working conditions for social care personnel.
In terms of job creation, Morgan stated that over 40,000 jobs have been generated during the current term of the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament. The Welsh Government has also supported local businesses and secured substantial inward investments, ranking among the highest in the UK. Regeneration initiatives are transforming town centres across Wales, with funding for arts venues tripling compared to a decade ago.
Investments in Housing and Infrastructure
Morgan’s administration has prioritized housing by unlocking land and backing new developments, successfully protecting over 4,600 homes and businesses from flooding. Every primary school pupil in Wales now benefits from free school meals, supported by an additional £262 million investment in schools, ensuring that every child receives a solid foundation for their education.
Improvements to infrastructure have also been a focus, with the completion of the Heads of the Valleys road enhancing travel efficiency and attracting new investments. The government has addressed road safety by repairing thousands of potholes, injecting hundreds of millions into road safety initiatives, and upgrading public transport, with most journeys now utilizing new trains. Furthermore, £110 million has been allocated for better bus services, safer school routes, and affordable £1 bus fares for young people, along with the installation of additional electric vehicle charging points.
Morgan concluded her reflection by reaffirming her commitment to the people of Wales. “This past year, I’ve stuck to the promise I made to listen, to learn and to deliver. But we’re not done yet. There’s still more to do, more voices to hear and more communities to back,” she stated.
She remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the potential for collaboration in building a stronger, fairer, and more connected Wales.
