Football Hooligan Slaps Jack Grealish After Insult Exchange

A football hooligan has been convicted for slapping England and Manchester City winger Jack Grealish following a heated exchange after the Manchester Derby on April 6, 2025. The incident occurred at Old Trafford, where Manchester City faced Manchester United in a goalless match.
Alfie Holt, 20, from Droylsden, Greater Manchester, admitted to the assault during proceedings at Manchester Magistrates’ Court. Holt stated he acted in response to Grealish allegedly calling him an “ugly little w*****” as the players exited the pitch. While Holt received a three-year Football Banning Order, he was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £48 surcharge.
In court, Holt expressed remorse, saying, “I did not expect him to say what he said to me and I have reacted. I regret it. That’s it.” However, it was revealed that Holt had initiated the confrontation by shouting insults at Grealish and other City players, including Phil Foden. Prosecutor Shazia Aslam noted that both sets of fans were vocally engaging in abusive chants towards rival players during the match.
As Grealish approached the tunnel area after the game, he reportedly heard Holt’s insults and attempted to engage in conversation. Witness statements indicated that amid the cacophony of the crowd, Grealish could not hear Holt’s remarks clearly. The situation escalated when Holt slapped Grealish as he turned to walk away.
The court was shown a brief video clip of the incident, which lacked audio. Following the altercation, Holt was arrested outside the stadium. During police questioning, Holt admitted to drinking prior to the match and mentioned that he had shouted at other City players, but had no prior convictions.
Defending Holt, Melanie Winstanley argued that the assault was out of character for her client, who had held a Manchester United season ticket for twelve years. She described the incident as a “very minor assault” and emphasized that Holt had accepted responsibility for his actions.
The match was further tainted by derogatory chants directed at Grealish’s teammate, Phil Foden, prompting City manager Pep Guardiola to condemn the behavior of some fans. He remarked on the “lack of integrity and class” displayed, particularly regarding the nature of the insults.
This incident is not the first time Grealish has faced aggression from rival fans. In 2019, he was assaulted by a Birmingham City supporter during a pitch invasion. The previous attacker was subsequently jailed for his actions.
As the football community continues to grapple with issues of fan behavior, the conviction of Holt serves as a reminder of the consequences of violence and the need for sportsmanship in football.
