KISS Co-Founder Ace Frehley Passes Away at 74
Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founder of the iconic rock band KISS, has died at the age of 74. His passing occurred last night, as confirmed by a statement from his family, which was reported by Rolling Stone. Frehley’s death is attributed to complications from a recent fall in his home studio.
Frehley’s spokesperson, Lori Lousarijan, expressed the family’s heartbreak in a public statement, saying, “We are completely heartbroken. In his final moments, as he left this world, we were fortunate to surround him with love, peace, prayers, and good wishes.” The family also emphasized that Frehley’s memory will live on forever.
A Legacy in Rock Music
KISS emerged onto the music scene in the 1970s, quickly becoming a defining force in rock music. The band’s distinctive sound, theatrical performances, and futuristic face paint helped them gain global recognition. They are often credited as pioneers of heavy metal, blending elements of hard rock and glam rock. Their 1975 hits, including “Rock and Roll All Nite” and the landmark live album Alive!, solidified their place in music history.
Over the years, KISS released a total of 26 albums, each achieving gold status, with every album in the United States selling at least 500,000 copies. This remarkable achievement sets them apart from any other American band. Additionally, 14 of their albums reached platinum status, selling over one million copies, although some were released after Frehley departed the group.
Frehley, known for his persona as “The Spaceman,” helped create the unique image of KISS alongside fellow band members: lead vocalist and bassist Gene Simmons, guitarist Paul Stanley, and drummer Peter Criss. He remained with KISS until 1982, after which he launched his own project, Frehley’s Comet. His solo career took off with the hit “New York Groove,” which was released in 1978.
Early Life and Influences
Born April 27, 1951, in the Bronx, Frehley discovered his passion for music as a teenager. He began playing guitar and attended concerts by bands such as The Who and Cream. Before joining KISS, he played in various groups, eventually responding to a newspaper ad seeking a guitarist, which led him to meet Simmons, Stanley, and Criss during rehearsals in their Queens studio.
Frehley’s contributions to KISS and rock music are immeasurable. His innovative guitar work and signature sound have influenced countless musicians and shaped the landscape of rock for generations. The world remembers him not only as a talented musician but also as a cultural icon whose legacy will endure in the hearts of fans worldwide.
