Montenegro’s Football Team Faces Humiliating Defeat in Faroe Islands
The Montenegro national football team suffered a disheartening defeat, losing 4-0 to the Faroe Islands on October 8, 2023. This loss marks a significant low point for the team, which had previously struggled in their recent performances. The match was part of the ongoing qualifying campaign for the UEFA Euro 2024, and the result has raised serious concerns about the direction of Montenegro’s football.
This defeat comes just months after Montenegro narrowly defeated the same Faroe Islands team 1-0 in March 2023, a match that appeared to signal a potential resurgence. The latest result, however, has left fans and analysts questioning the team’s capabilities, especially against opponents ranked 136th in the FIFA standings.
Significant Decline in Performance
Montenegro’s football team has now faced two consecutive 4-0 losses, the previous one being against Croatia. The team’s failure to score in three consecutive matches highlights a troubling trend, with the squad now enduring a streak of nine losses away from home and ten matches without a victory overall. This continuous decline in performance has led many to reevaluate the current state of the national team.
Stefan Savić, who captained the team in the absence of Stevan Jovetić, expressed disappointment following the match. He stated, “The pitch was only one measure; we can talk about fairy tales of being first in the group, but that is not realistic. Heavy defeats happen, and we are experiencing a generational shift. We need to keep our heads down and work harder.”
New head coach Mirko Vučinić acknowledged the challenges ahead. Despite his call for rigorous training and improvement, Vučinić faced criticism for tactical decisions made during the match, particularly his lack of substitutions at halftime when the team was trailing 2-0. Observers noted that the team’s formation, a 3-5-2 style reminiscent of Vučinić’s mentor, Antonio Conte, may not suit the current roster, especially without key players like Adam Marušić.
Looking Ahead
The defeat in the Faroe Islands has prompted calls for a complete reassessment of Montenegro’s football strategy. Many believe that a significant overhaul is necessary, focusing on rejuvenating the player roster and adopting a fresh mindset. Marko Šimun, a debutant midfielder, emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “The first goal cut us off, and until then, we hadn’t played that poorly. We need to analyze and correct our mistakes.”
Montenegro’s next match is a friendly against Liechtenstein on October 16, 2023, followed by an away game against Gibraltar in November. These upcoming fixtures are crucial for the team to break their losing streak and regain some confidence before facing Croatia at home.
The 4-0 loss against the Faroe Islands stands as a stark reminder of the challenges Montenegro faces in their quest for success on the international stage. As the team navigates this difficult period, fans can only hope for improved performances and a brighter future ahead.
