Palestinian Ambassador Highlights Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, according to Palestinian Ambassador to Montenegro, Rabii Alhantouli. In a recent interview, he condemned what he described as a genocidal war waged by Israel against the Palestinian people, particularly over the past two years. The ongoing conflict has led to a staggering number of civilian casualties, with reports suggesting that the actual death toll may exceed 68,122, which includes at least 18,592 children and 12,400 women.
Approximately 90 percent of the Gaza Strip has been devastated by the use of over 200,000 tons of bombs. Alhantouli emphasized that the majority of victims are civilians, with over 178,814 individuals injured and lacking access to basic medical care. He described the current situation as a planned massacre, stating that no one is spared from the violence. The ambassador highlighted that Israeli forces have killed 252 journalists, 1,411 medical and humanitarian workers, and 800 educators, while also destroying 39 hospitals and damaging 95 percent of schools in the region.
Alhantouli expressed concern over the systematic targeting of civilians, stating, “We are victims of the most barbaric aggression in modern human history.” He pointed out that the violence extends beyond Gaza, with ongoing ethnic cleansing occurring in the West Bank, including Jerusalem. The ambassador criticized the Israeli government for accelerating its settlement expansion and imposing collective punishment on the Palestinian population, which includes over 900 military checkpoints that hinder movement and suffocate the economy.
In discussing the broader context of the conflict, Alhantouli traced its roots back to 1948, when Israel was established through colonial powers that displaced the Palestinian population. He condemned the current Israeli government, which he characterized as fascist, for using the actions of Hamas as a pretext for violence while portraying itself as a victim.
Looking forward, Alhantouli mentioned the upcoming negotiations scheduled in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, between Israel and Hamas. He remains hopeful for a peaceful resolution but cautioned that the Israeli government has consistently sabotaged ceasefire efforts, undermining international attempts to halt the violence.
The United Nations has characterized Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal, a claim Alhantouli supports, citing findings from various international human rights organizations. He criticized the international community for failing to fulfill its obligations under international law and treaties, including the Genocide Convention.
Alhantouli highlighted the need for international pressure and concrete measures against Israel to facilitate a genuine peace process. He expressed disappointment with the European Union’s response to the conflict, noting that despite some recent positive changes, the EU has not taken sufficient action against Israel’s violations of human rights.
The ambassador also emphasized the crucial role of the Palestinian diplomatic presence in the region, particularly in Montenegro, to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis and encourage solidarity. He stated, “The voice of Palestine must be heard everywhere, as spreading the truth is the first step towards justice and peace.”
In conclusion, Alhantouli reiterated the importance of collective action and accountability in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He urged the international community to uphold its responsibilities under international law to protect civilians and promote a just and lasting peace in the region.
