The sister of Rhiannon Whyte, who was murdered in a brutal and unprovoked attack, delivered a heartfelt statement outside Wolverhampton Crown Court following the conviction of the assailant, Deng Chol Majek. Majek, an asylum seeker, was found guilty of murdering Rhiannon during an incident at Bescot Stadium Station on October 20, 2024.

Alex Whyte described the attack as “frenzied,” revealing that her sister was followed from her workplace at the nearby Park Inn Hotel to the station around 23:00. During the assault, Rhiannon was on a phone call with a friend, who heard her screams as Majek attacked her repeatedly with a screwdriver. Tragically, Rhiannon succumbed to a catastrophic brain injury in the hospital three days later.

Majek’s actions were captured on CCTV, which played a crucial role in his identification. He was arrested in his hotel room, where police recovered items that linked him to the crime, including a jacket and sandals stained with Rhiannon’s blood. DNA evidence was also found under his fingernails, further solidifying the case against him. The jury deliberated for just over two hours before delivering their verdict.

Emotional Statement from Rhiannon’s Sister

Following the verdict, Alex Whyte spoke passionately about her family’s loss. “I stand here today to represent myself, our mother, our other three siblings, Emma, Daniel, and Cara, as well as Rhiannon’s now six-year-old son, two nieces, seven nephews, extended family, and friends,” she said.

She recounted the anguish her family has endured since the attack, stating, “On that horrific day, our precious Rhiannon was shown no mercy. There is no end to the pain and suffering we have had to endure or continue to experience.”

Alex emphasized that the case should not be viewed through the lens of immigration or asylum issues but rather as a reflection of one individual’s actions. “Throughout this trial, we have been given no reason as to why he chose Rhiannon. No accountability for his actions and no remorse,” she continued. “She fought for her life and to save herself from this sick, twisted, and cowardly human.”

In a poignant closing, Alex quoted Rhiannon’s favorite Disney character, Stitch, saying, “Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. Rhiannon will never be forgotten. Thank you.”

Next Steps in Legal Proceedings

Deng Chol Majek is scheduled to return to Wolverhampton Crown Court for sentencing on December 15, 2024. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the impact of violent crime on families and communities. As the legal proceedings continue, Rhiannon’s family remains committed to advocating for change in her name, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.
