Steve Witkoff Refutes Claims of Stepping Back from Diplomacy
Steve Witkoff, the special envoy for the United States, has publicly denied reports suggesting he intends to reduce his involvement in the Trump administration following his role in mediating a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. In a post on X, Witkoff described the claims as “100 percent Fake News” and demanded an immediate retraction. He emphasized his ongoing commitment to the peace process and his support for President Donald Trump.
The controversy arose after Middle East Eye reported on October 10, 2023, citing two sources familiar with the situation, that Witkoff was planning to step back from his diplomatic duties to concentrate on his business interests after what was described as “gruelling” negotiations. Witkoff, who served as a State Department employee in the first half of 2023, was designated as a special envoy by Trump and has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts.
Arab officials involved in the ceasefire negotiations have indicated a preference for Witkoff’s approach compared to other diplomats associated with the Biden administration. Speaking to Middle East Eye, these officials noted that Witkoff’s connections and direct engagement with various parties, including Hamas, facilitated the peace deal. His established rapport with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also highlighted as a significant asset in the negotiations.
Following the successful ceasefire, Witkoff participated in a brief meeting between Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the Gaza peace summit. He asserted that he would remain involved in the next phases of the peace initiative, particularly focusing on Gaza’s reconstruction efforts. “The minute we had inked the deal, Jared and I were already working on the implementation side of the deal,” Witkoff stated, referring to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and advisor who played a crucial role in the mediation process.
Witkoff’s assertion of continued involvement was further supported by Anna Kelly, the White House deputy press secretary, who characterized the reports of his stepping back as “totally false.” Kelly noted that the administration would have clarified the situation had they been given adequate opportunity to respond before the article’s publication.
With a net worth estimated at $2 billion by Forbes, Witkoff transitioned from a successful legal career to real estate development after meeting Trump in the 1980s. His current role as a global troubleshooter for Trump involves addressing conflicts, including those in Gaza and Ukraine.
As the diplomatic landscape continues to evolve, Witkoff’s determination to remain engaged in the peace process reflects a commitment to both his role in the administration and the broader goals of conflict resolution in the region. His future actions will be closely watched as the situation in Gaza develops.
