Dwayne Johnson, known as “The Rock,” shared a deeply emotional moment recently as he participated in a traditional Samoan dance, the Taualuga, alongside his family in Hawaii. The 53-year-old actor and former wrestler showcased his Polynesian heritage by performing the dance, which holds significant cultural importance.

In a touching video posted on Instagram, Johnson was seen dancing with his mother, Ata Johnson, and his daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, as well as Simone, his eldest daughter from a previous relationship. During the ceremonial display, Johnson removed his shirt to proudly reveal his Polynesian tattoo, a symbol of his cultural identity.

Johnson described the event as a sacred experience, writing, “I was blessed to have this very special moment on stage with my mom, my daughters, and our aiga (family) – dancing our Samoan culture’s sacred dance, the Taualuga.” He elaborated on the customs involved, noting that it is traditional for Samoan men to take off their shirts to display their tatau (tattoo) and the stories it represents.

Johnson emphasized the importance of the dance, stating, “I’m slapping the ground as a way to show my respect for how significant this is and how SACRED our ground becomes in this moment with our elders, and my daughters dancing next to me.” He expressed the emotional weight of the occasion, saying, “You can’t help but feel it. The mana. Life is busy for everyone – so special moments like this mean the world to me, to honour our family, our culture and always so good coming back home to Hawaii.”

Representing Polynesian Culture in Film

Earlier this year, Johnson also articulated his pride in representing Polynesian culture through his role as Maui in the Disney animated film series, Moana. He noted, “The thing about ‘Moana’ – and I think the success about ‘Moana’ – is just this global embrace of our Polynesian culture, and it’s really cool.”

He expressed particular joy in knowing that his daughters see themselves reflected in the character of Moana. Johnson remarked, “Of everything that I love about Moana, the thing that I love most is my daughters… see themselves in Moana. And I think this idea of emboldening and empowering our young women is so important.”

The actor takes delight in the positive influence the film has on young girls, stating, “I get to run around, with my long hair as Maui, and go, ‘Cheehoo,’ and embolden our young girls – it’s awesome.”

Johnson’s heartfelt celebration of his roots and commitment to cultural representation underscores his dedication to both family and heritage. His recent performance serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring one’s culture and the bonds that unite family.
