A father has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for using his vehicle as a weapon to injure over 100 people during a victory parade in Liverpool. Paul Doyle, 54, was visibly distressed as he learned his fate at Liverpool Crown Court. The incident occurred on May 26, 2023, when Doyle drove his Ford Galaxy into a crowd celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title victory.

The court described the incident as one fueled by rage. Prosecutors stated that Doyle was “consumed by rage” and that his “anger had completely taken hold of him” during the horrifying moments. He pleaded guilty to 31 offences, including dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of attempted grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent.

Video footage shown in court depicted the chaos as Doyle’s nearly two-ton vehicle collided with the crowd over a span of just two minutes. Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC noted that Doyle was “prepared to cause serious harm, even to children, if necessary to achieve his aim of getting through.” Victim impact statements revealed the lasting trauma experienced by witnesses, with some recounting “flashbacks” and emotional distress.

Details of the Incident and Legal Proceedings

Doyle, who was in the city to pick up friends, lost his temper amidst the festivities. His actions were described as an “inexplicable and undiluted fury” by Judge Andrew Menary KC, who presided over the case. The judge condemned Doyle’s behaviour, stating, “To drive a vehicle into crowds of pedestrians with such persistence and disregard for human life defies ordinary understanding.”

The youngest victim of Doyle’s actions was six-month-old Teddy Eveson, who was reportedly thrown about 15 feet from his pram during the collision. Doyle admitted to attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm on the infant, highlighting the severity of his actions. Five other children were also harmed, though legal restrictions prevent their identification.

During the sentencing hearing, Doyle was seen weeping as the testimonies of his victims were read aloud. Parents described how what was supposed to be a joyful day turned into a traumatic experience. His defense attorney, Simon Csoka KC, emphasized Doyle’s remorse, stating, “He’s horrified by the consequences of what occurred.”

Repercussions and Responses

The incident has sparked outrage and concern over public safety. Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald expressed disbelief at Doyle’s lack of regard for the safety of others, particularly the children present that day. He stated, “It is sheer luck that no lives were lost.”

Doyle’s driving behaviour leading up to the incident included running a red light and aggressively overtaking other vehicles. Following the collision, he claimed he feared for his safety after seeing someone with a knife; however, police found no evidence to support this assertion. Doyle was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and no defects were found in his vehicle.

As the court proceedings concluded, the ripple effects of Doyle’s actions were clear. His reckless behaviour transformed a day meant for celebration into a scene of horror, forever altering the lives of those who were present. The emotional and psychological scars left by the incident will be felt by the victims and their families for years to come.
