Fourth Body Discovered in Three Days at Whitby Cliffs Triggers Investigation

The discovery of a woman’s body at the base of cliffs in Sandsend, near Whitby, marks the fourth such incident in just three days. The remains of the unidentified woman, who is believed to be in her 50s and from the local area, were found on August 1, 2023, after a passerby alerted emergency services at 11:01 AM.

North Yorkshire Police’s coastal team confirmed that the woman’s body was retrieved at 12:55 PM and the scene was reopened by 14:15 PM following thorough investigations. Authorities stated that the tragic incident is not being treated as suspicious, and it appears unrelated to the previous deaths that occurred in the same area.

Earlier, on July 30, 2023, a man and a woman, both in their 40s, fell from the cliffs, resulting in their deaths. The following day, another woman in her 60s was found near the cliffs by the pavilion. While these events occurred in close succession, police have emphasized that the tragedies do not appear to be connected.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police remarked, “Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat, and fire service attended. Officers are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time. A report is being prepared for the coroner.”
