Herefordshire Villages Set for New 30mph Speed Limits
Roads in six villages across Herefordshire will see their speed limits reduced to 30 miles per hour as part of new traffic regulation orders approved by Herefordshire Council. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and improve the quality of life for residents.
The affected areas include significant stretches of road such as the B4260 Wilton Road, where the speed limit will be lowered from 40mph to 30mph. This change extends from Ross-on-Wye to the village of Wilton, including Wilton Lane and Fisherman’s Reach within the village.
Another reduction will take place on the B4234 between Kerne Bridge and the river Wye, which will also see its limit drop from 40mph to 30mph. Notably, this will be implemented as an “experimental” traffic regulation order (TRO), meaning it will be reviewed after 18 months to assess its effectiveness.
Further changes include the reduction of the speed limit on the C1019 through the village of Leinthall Starkes, which will be lowered to 30mph throughout its entirety. Additionally, the existing 30mph limit in Weobley will be expanded along three approach roads: the B4230 Mill Bank to the west, the C1093 Gadbridge Road to the northeast, and the C1094 Burtonwood to the southeast.
In Burghill, the speed limit will extend along an unclassified road southward beyond the houses known as The Steppes. Furthermore, a new 30mph limit will be introduced along the minor Roman Road west of Stretton Sugwas, replacing the current national speed limit of 60mph.
According to guidance from the Department for Transport, the council emphasizes that “fear of traffic can affect people’s quality of life in villages.” It asserts that villages should maintain speed limits comparable to those found in urban areas, thereby establishing a norm of 30mph through such regions.
The overall cost of implementing these measures is estimated at £128,000, which includes consultations with councillors, officials, and local residents. This investment underscores the council’s commitment to enhancing road safety and community well-being across Herefordshire.
