History Teacher Banned After Inappropriate Comments to Students

A history teacher has been banned from the profession for five years following inappropriate comments made to students at Brunts Academy in Mansfield, England. During a session with pupils, Grant Nightingale referred to a so-called “top five sh*g list” of teachers, a discussion that alarmed school authorities and led to a formal investigation by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).
The misconduct panel revealed that Nightingale, 35, not only made the inappropriate comment about his list but also made remarks regarding students’ personal lives. He expressed disappointment in students who might make “the wrong choices” regarding their sexual relationships. In a troubling interaction with a female pupil, he stated, “everything doesn’t have to be about sleeping with boys.”
Nightingale’s conduct included sharing personal anecdotes about his sexual experiences at the age of his students, as well as derogatory comments about a pupil’s former girlfriend, calling her a “smackhead,” and labeling another pupil’s ex-boyfriend as a “nonce.” He also made a questionable remark to a pupil experiencing relationship difficulties, offering, “I would cuddle you if I could cuddle you.”
In 2020, Nightingale exchanged messages with two pupils via the school’s email system. He admitted that his behavior was unprofessional and failed to report that some students expressed that they “missed” or “loved” him. The panel noted that he lacked an understanding of the professional boundaries expected of a teacher.
The TRA’s report highlighted “serious and repeated breaches of safeguarding requirements,” alongside a failure to escalate safeguarding concerns. It concluded that Nightingale’s actions demonstrated a “grossly insufficient awareness” of his role as an educator and the need to maintain professional boundaries with pupils.
The panel determined that Nightingale’s behavior warranted a five-year ban from teaching, with a recommendation to review his case in five years. He had joined Brunts Academy in April 2019 but was dismissed by October 2020 due to these transgressions.
The findings of this case serve as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining professionalism in educational settings, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students.
