A homeless man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a woman who offered him shelter in her home. Apapale Adoum, aged 39, killed Victoria Adams, 37, with a mallet on February 9, 2024, in her residence located in Hammersmith, west London. Adoum pleaded guilty to murder during a hearing at the Old Bailey in August, where he was subsequently remanded in custody.
At the sentencing hearing, Judge Nigel Lickley KC imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years. The judge remarked, “Victoria Adams was murdered in her own home. She had taken you in and offered you shelter.” Judge Lickley further stated that Adoum had “betrayed the kindness and good nature of Victoria Adams,” noting that he armed himself before launching a “brutal and savage” attack when she requested him to leave.
The impact of this tragedy on Ms. Adams’ family was profound. In a victim impact statement, her aunt, Cathy Adams, described her niece as “very trusting, generous to a fault, caring and fun-loving.” Cathy expressed the family’s devastation, stating, “Vicky tried to repay the kindness she had been shown by others and she paid for this with her life.”
The emotional toll was echoed by Sophie Luff, Ms. Adams’ younger sister, who revealed the shock she experienced upon learning of her sister’s death. “The day I found out she was gone I was in complete shock,” Luff said. “The hardest part is knowing she left behind four beautiful children. It breaks my heart to know they will grow up without her.”
A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms. Adams had suffered at least ten separate blows to the back and side of her head. The murder weapon, a hammer, was discovered nearby, stained with her blood and DNA. Ms. Adams had met Adoum just three days prior at a homeless shelter, where she had offered him a place to stay. However, she later wrote a note asking him to leave.
Police were alerted to the scene after receiving reports of a man attempting to break into the property on Coulter Road. Officers found Ms. Adams face down in a bedroom with a black bin bag over her head, covered by a pillow.
The shocking nature of this crime has left the local community reeling. Residents reported hearing “piercing screams” in the days leading up to the tragic discovery. A neighbor, Ellie Scot, described the incident as “shocking,” noting that the area is typically quiet and peaceful.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the timeline of events, stating, “On Sunday, 9 February at 22:13hrs, police were called to a residential property in Coulter Road following reports that a man was attempting to force entry into one of the flats.” The spokesperson added that officers arrived and, having gained entry to the property, found the deceased woman.
This case highlights the vulnerability of those who extend kindness to strangers, as well as the tragic consequences that can arise from such acts of generosity.
