Machete Attack in Congo Highlights Escalating Terror by ADF
A brutal machete attack on March 12, 2023, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) claimed the lives of at least 40 individuals, including 21 victims who had gathered for a prayer vigil. This horrific incident in the rural town of Komanda, located in Ituri Province, is attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a militant group with ties to the Islamic State. The assault has drawn significant attention due to its brutality, as more bodies were discovered in nearby burned homes and businesses, with many victims remaining unidentified.
The attack is seen as part of a wider and systematic campaign of violence targeting vulnerable communities. According to Illia Djadi, a senior researcher for the Open Doors Foundation, which supports persecuted Christians globally, the international community is overlooking a disturbing trend of escalating violence in the region. Djadi stated, “The killings are very strategic. They are attacking defenceless rural farming communities, where there’s no security presence.”
Operating primarily in the dead of night, the ADF employs machetes for their brutal attacks, often beheading victims to avoid drawing attention. Djadi pointed out that their recent actions highlight a pattern of massacring village after village, which continues largely unchecked. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that while discussions around a proposed peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda, brokered by former U.S. President Donald Trump, gain political focus, the ongoing atrocities committed by the ADF are being largely ignored.
“There’s no attention on the activity of ADF and the ongoing massacres,” Djadi remarked. “This power vacuum has allowed them to continue the slaughter unchecked, and often unreported.” He further explained that the ADF aims to establish a significant Islamic caliphate in the DRC, reminiscent of the violence instigated by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
Call for Action from Government and Global Community
The scale of violence in eastern DRC is staggering, with Djadi reporting that around six million people have been killed in the region over the past 30 years, and eight million displaced internally. He advocates for a robust response akin to the efforts made to defeat the Islamic State in the Middle East, urging the DRC government to take responsibility for the safety of its citizens.
Djadi insists that the international community must also recognize the gravity of the situation. “We need to see a clear willingness and responsibility from the government to protect their citizens. And the international community also needs to wake up to what’s happening,” he stated.
The Open Doors Foundation has mobilized its partner groups in Komanda to provide emergency aid, medical assistance, and trauma support to survivors of the recent attacks. The foundation is committed to helping those affected by violence due to their faith, further emphasizing the dire need for a coordinated response to the ongoing crisis.
As the world watches, the situation in the DRC remains precarious, with the ADF’s violent campaign posing a significant threat to communities already suffering from decades of conflict and instability. The need for immediate action and international awareness has never been more pressing.
