Manchester United Pursues Ollie Watkins Amid Aston Villa’s Rejection

Manchester United has reportedly set its sights on signing Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, despite the Midlands club’s firm stance that their striker is not for sale. With over a month remaining in the transfer window, United has already bolstered its attacking options by acquiring Matheus Cunha from Wolves and finalizing the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford earlier this week.
As Ruben Amorim leads the club’s rebuilding efforts, the need for a new number nine has become increasingly apparent, especially with current forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee not meeting expectations. According to a report by The Telegraph, United is prioritizing a striker with Premier League experience, making Watkins a prime candidate.
Watkins, who has spent his entire professional career in England, joined Villa from Brentford in 2020 after developing his skills at Exeter City. The 29-year-old has accumulated over 180 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 75 goals and achieving double-digit tallies in each of his five seasons with Villa.
Despite the interest from United, Aston Villa has conveyed that Watkins is “not for sale” this summer, effectively issuing a strong warning to potential suitors. The club regards Watkins as a vital asset and has previously rejected an offer from Arsenal during the January transfer window. Instead of selling their striker, Villa opted to generate funds through the sale of Jhon Duran to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
The current market presents limited quality striker options, and Villa’s reluctance to part with Watkins is understandable given the fierce competition among top Premier League clubs. Journalist Ben Jacobs recently reported that United has engaged in fresh discussions regarding Watkins, but the £60 million valuation set by Villa is perceived as excessive for a player approaching 30.
While United is willing to consider negotiations if the price decreases, Villa’s steadfast position makes a transfer unlikely at this time. As alternatives, United is reportedly evaluating other forwards, including Benjamin Sesko, Nicolas Jackson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
As the transfer window progresses, Manchester United fans remain eager for updates on the club’s pursuit of new talent. The club continues to focus on enhancing its squad while navigating the complexities of the transfer market.
