Mary Berry has expressed no regrets about her decision to leave The Great British Bake Off, affirming that she was “quite right” to remain loyal to the BBC. Berry, along with original hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, departed the popular baking competition in 2017 after Channel 4 secured the rights to air future seasons, outbidding the BBC, the show’s original broadcaster.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, Berry reflected on her choice to continue her career with the BBC, stating, “I feel very cherished by the BBC, and it was quite right I stayed with them.” Following her departure from the show, she has enjoyed a successful television career with various programs on the BBC, including Classic Mary Berry (2018) and Britain’s Best Home Cook (2018). Additionally, she hosted specials like Mary Berry’s Highland Christmas (2023) and The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years In The Baking (2022).

Berry recounted her early moments with the show, recalling how her initial audition highlighted her need for a co-judge. “I said, ‘I do need someone with a second opinion, and I’m really not very good at bread. It’s not my forte.’ So that’s how Paul Hollywood came. And gosh, he was very different from me,” she said. Berry emphasized her supportive approach to contestants, stating, “I don’t want tears. So, if something had collapsed in the middle, I’d say to a contestant, ‘Do you know what you could do with that? You could just scoop a little bit out, fill it with fruit and cream, and you’ve got a pudding.’”

Following Berry’s exit, Prue Leith stepped in as a judge, while Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig took over presenting duties from Giedroyc and Perkins. Toksvig left the series in 2020 and was replaced by Matt Lucas. Additionally, Alison Hammond later joined Fielding on the show, continuing the series’ evolution.

The latest issue of Radio Times will be available on October 14, 2023.
