Massive Sinkhole Opens in Bangkok, Swallowing Cars and Causing Chaos

A significant sinkhole measuring 164 feet opened in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 15, 2024, leading to widespread disruption and evacuations. The collapse of a major road left vehicles and debris swallowed in the massive hole, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties despite the destruction of three cars and considerable traffic issues that persisted for hours.

According to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, the sinkhole’s emergence is likely linked to ongoing construction for a nearby underground train station. “We’re monitoring the damage and rushing to backfill the gap,” he stated, noting that while the situation has stabilized somewhat, further sliding may still occur.

Authorities issued warnings about potential worsening conditions as heavy rain, typical of Thailand’s current monsoon season, is expected to hit the area. The sinkhole’s edge dangerously approached a police station, exposing its underground infrastructure. Consequently, evacuations were ordered for the police station and other nearby buildings to ensure public safety.

Footage captured during the incident revealed the chaotic scene as drivers attempted to flee the growing hole, while pedestrians rushed to safety. The four-lane road was ultimately severed, exacerbating traffic congestion throughout the city. Furthermore, a local hospital announced the temporary closure of its outpatient services for two days as a precautionary measure, although officials confirmed that the hospital’s structure remained unaffected.

The situation in Bangkok comes at a challenging time, as the city is also dealing with the aftermath of a recent 8.2 magnitude earthquake. This natural disaster caused extensive damage, collapsing buildings and tragically resulting in numerous fatalities. The US Geological Survey has indicated that between 10,000 and 100,000 people might have died as a result of the earthquake, with many others feared trapped beneath rubble.

As the city grapples with these crises, it also faces the impending threat of Super Typhoon Ragasa, which has been dubbed the “king of storms.” This additional challenge raises concerns about further damage and disruption in an already affected region.

Bangkok has recently gained attention as the world’s most visited city in 2024, attracting a record 32.4 million tourists, according to Euromonitor International.
