New £750k Community Hub Opens in Berkeley, Enhancing Local Services

A new community hub in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, officially opened on October 20, 2023, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Vice Lord-Lieutenant Richard Bradley. The GL13 Community Hub, which cost approximately £750,000, aims to provide essential services, host community meetings, and serve as the town’s library. After a lengthy 13-year effort driven by local volunteers, the hub is now poised to become a central resource for residents.
The project was made possible through the hard work and fundraising of community members. John Stanton, chairman of trustees for the GL13 Community Hub, emphasized that the facility will be more than just a library. “We’ve got all sorts of activities planned,” he stated. “A number have already started, including a craft club, gardening club, and history group.” The hub will also host services such as a food bank, Citizens Advice, and housing advice from the local council.
Stanton highlighted the significance of community contributions, noting that the project relied on 27 different sources of funding. “Stroud District Council were really helpful,” he added. “We did a crowdfunding campaign that raised about £20,000—a lot of locals have been very generous.”
Community Support and Infrastructure Development
Krista Harris, the senior community infrastructure officer for Stroud District Council, praised the community’s resilience in overcoming challenges associated with funding. She noted that contributions from local housing developments played a crucial role in the project. “This project was considered to be a really important item of social infrastructure that will provide for a multitude of community uses,” Harris explained. “It’s going to serve people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds.”
The importance of having a central meeting place in Berkeley cannot be overstated, according to District Councillor Paul Turner. “The old library was one that was falling apart,” he remarked. “When it came to demolishing it, they pushed on one wall and it all collapsed.” He emphasized that this new building is vital for uniting the community, which has lacked a proper meeting space until now.
Turner expressed gratitude for the support provided by the District Council, which includes officers who will assist with housing repairs and organize classes tailored for the elderly. “One of the first things they are going to do is set up balance and strengthening classes,” he said, highlighting the hub’s role as a focal point for various community services.
A Space for All
District Council leader Chloe Turner also shared her enthusiasm for the project. “The community has decided what the community wants,” she noted. “We’re just seeking to support that coming forward.” She believes the hub will work effectively for everyone in the area, providing a beautiful space for diverse activities.
The GL13 Community Hub is open to the public on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 18:00, Fridays from 10:00 to 16:00, and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00. With its diverse offerings, the hub is set to become a vital resource for the residents of Berkeley and surrounding areas, fostering community engagement and providing essential support services.
