Outreach Worker Fatally Shot in San Francisco After Intervention
A homeless outreach worker was shot and killed in San Francisco after attempting to intervene in a drug-related incident outside a public library. Joey Alexander, 60, was fatally wounded on March 15, 2024, after asking a man to stop using drugs in front of the Main Library. Despite being rushed to the hospital for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Alexander was employed by Urban Alchemy, an organization dedicated to assisting the homeless population and providing employment opportunities for individuals recently released from prison. His tragic death highlights the dangers faced by outreach workers who strive to create safer communities.
Incident Details and Suspect Identification
The incident occurred when Alexander confronted Edmund Bowen, 42, about his alleged drug use. According to witnesses and police reports, the two men exchanged words before Bowen allegedly pulled a shotgun from his bag and shot Alexander at close range. A spokesperson for Urban Alchemy, Jess Montejano, stated, “The suspect didn’t like that. They exchanged some words. My understanding is he said, ‘f*** Urban Alchemy,’ pulled a shotgun out of his bag and shot him in the torso area.”
Law enforcement officials, including sheriff’s deputies and police, were in the vicinity and quickly responded to the shooting. Medical assistance was called for Alexander, but his injuries proved fatal. Bowen was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody, with authorities working to file murder charges against him.
A Legacy of Redemption
Alexander’s family described him as a man dedicated to helping others. His brother, Marvin Alexander, shared that Joey spent 23 years in prison but found purpose upon his release by serving those in need. “He wanted to make right what he’d done in his past,” Marvin stated. “Whatever he was doing, it was the right thing. He loved his job, I know that. He loved his job.”
Joey Alexander is survived by two sons. His family hopes he will be remembered not for his past but for the positive impact he made in his community. Marvin emphasized the importance of viewing Joey’s contributions, saying, “Don’t look at him for what he’d done. Look at him for what he was doing.”
The incident has sparked discussions about the safety of outreach workers and the challenges they face while serving vulnerable populations. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated individual whose life was dedicated to service.
