Study Reveals Brits Avoid Public Toilets Due to Poor Hygiene

A significant study has revealed that many adults in the United Kingdom are shunning public toilets due to unsatisfactory hygiene conditions. The survey, which involved polling 1,000 UK adults, found that a large number of users encounter facilities that are dirty, lack essential items like hand soap or toilet paper, and are often plagued by unpleasant odors and spillages. Alarmingly, only 17% of washrooms consistently meet basic hygiene standards.
The research was commissioned by hygiene brand Tork and involved feedback from 11,500 individuals across 11 nations. It highlights a concerning trend where 23% of Britons have cut short their visits to cultural or entertainment venues due to the condition of the facilities. Furthermore, 15% of respondents reported avoiding a return to venues after a negative experience with public restrooms.
Impact on Venues and Visitor Experience
The findings underscore the impact of inadequate restroom facilities on businesses. According to Olivia Slater from Essity, the company behind Tork products, the figures are particularly troubling for individuals with specific physical or cognitive conditions. She stated, “While wheelchair users and those who are pregnant are especially concerned, there is also a lot of concern among those living with less visible conditions.”
The survey revealed that 30% of respondents have reduced their time in such venues compared to previous visits, while 17% have specifically avoided food and drink options—crucial revenue sources for these establishments. The research indicated that substandard toilet conditions have left 26% of users feeling exasperated, with 13% experiencing worry or tension.
Additionally, 24% of respondents attempt to avoid touching items or surfaces in entertainment or cultural venue toilets, and 11% refuse to enter the facilities when others are present. The discomfort extends to workplace facilities, as 15% of individuals reported avoiding their workplace toilets altogether, with 19% limiting their food and beverage intake to prevent the need to use them.
Key Hygiene Concerns and Recommendations
The study identified major hygiene issues that users feel staff neglect in public toilets. The most pressing concerns include the cleanliness of toilet bowls, cited by 44% of respondents, and the availability of hand soap, noted by 39%. Additionally, 40% of individuals expressed anxiety over adequate ventilation, while 41% reported seeing rubbish bins overflowing without regular emptying.
Olivia Slater emphasized the broader implications of hygiene on business reputation, stating, “Clean and sanitary toilets are not just a matter of public health—they’re a reflection of how much an organization values its people and its visitors.” She highlighted that “inclusive hygiene” extends beyond just cleanliness, ensuring everyone, regardless of ability or circumstance, has comfortable access to hygiene in often busy spaces.
The findings of this study serve as a wake-up call for venues across the UK and beyond. By prioritizing hygiene and inclusivity, organizations can improve the overall experience for their visitors while also protecting their reputation and revenue streams.
