Thailand Launches Airstrikes Amid Renewed Tensions with Cambodia

Thailand has initiated a series of airstrikes along its contested border with Cambodia, escalating tensions that were thought to have eased following a US-brokered ceasefire deal. Both nations are now engaged in a war of words over the origins of the violence, which has reignited after several months of relative calm. The ceasefire agreement, signed in October, appears to be unraveling, bringing back memories of the deadly clashes that occurred in July, which resulted in numerous casualties among troops and civilians alike.

The conflict reignited when Thai military spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree accused Cambodian forces of firing first across multiple sections of Thai territory. He reported that one Thai serviceman was killed and four others injured in the incident, prompting the evacuation of local residents from potentially dangerous areas. The airstrikes were described by Suvaree as a necessary response aimed at “suppressing Cambodian supporting fire attacks” and targeting military positions across the border.

In stark contrast, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, firmly denied the allegations made by Thailand. She asserted that Cambodia had exercised restraint and had not retaliated to the initial aggression. “Cambodia urges that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activities that threaten peace and stability in the region,” she declared, calling for a de-escalation of the situation.

The recent flare-up in hostilities comes on the heels of a precarious truce that had been established to end the brief but intense fighting that erupted in July. During that period, both sides suffered significant losses, with casualties reported among both military personnel and civilians. The territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia are rooted in historical claims stemming from a 1907 map created during French colonial rule. This document, which delineated the boundaries between the two countries, remains a point of contention. Cambodia uses this map to support its territorial claims, while Thailand disputes its accuracy, asserting that it contains errors. The border, which stretches approximately 500 miles, has been a source of conflict for decades, particularly around significant sites such as the Preah Vihear temple, Ta Moan temple, and Ta Krabey temple.
