Marjan Šarec, the permanent rapporteur of the European Parliament for Montenegro, addressed the urgent need for the European Union (EU) to expand its membership during the recent 2BS Forum. He emphasized that the EU is currently operating on weak foundations and must not repeat past mistakes, particularly concerning North Macedonia’s accession process.

Addressing EU Expansion Challenges

Šarec pointed out that there is a consensus among EU officials about the necessity for new member states. He stated, “We are not the player we need to be. From my experience, we talk too much about how to converse but forget to show results.” He highlighted that North Macedonia has fulfilled its obligations but has yet to receive corresponding benefits.

He further noted that the challenges facing French President Emmanuel Macron on the domestic front could have repercussions for Montenegro, potentially rendering it a “collateral victim” in the broader context of EU membership discussions. Šarec insisted that Montenegro must take a more proactive stance in persuading EU citizens about its readiness for accession.

The Path Forward for Montenegro

During his remarks, Šarec reminded attendees that the accession process for any nation is inherently demanding and requires significant effort. He warned that if the EU does not act decisively, it risks undermining its own stability and credibility. “Montenegro needs to be more active in convincing EU citizens about our commitment and readiness,” he stated.

The call for a more robust approach to EU expansion comes at a critical time, as the bloc grapples with internal challenges and the need for cohesion. The ongoing discussions about new memberships could shape the future of the EU and its ability to influence regional stability.

Šarec’s comments reflect a growing anxiety among potential candidate countries about the EU’s willingness to integrate new members. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the EU’s response will be crucial in determining its long-term viability and relevance on the world stage.
