Controversy Erupts Over New Appointment in National Security Agency

A significant controversy has emerged surrounding the appointment of Drago Spicanovic as head of the Counterintelligence Service within the Agency for National Security (ANB). This comes as Dejan Vuksic, a security and defense advisor to the president, claims that Spicanovic was granted rapid access to classified information, raising questions about the integrity of the appointment process.
Vuksic stated during an appearance on Aplus Television that Spicanovic’s appointment followed the arrival of former ANB director Savo Kentera. He emphasized that the Counterintelligence Service, or KOZ, plays a crucial role beyond merely protecting state institutions; it is also responsible for safeguarding personnel. Notably, Vuksic pointed out that Spicanovic had never served as an official within the ANB, having transitioned from another institution to this influential position.
Vuksic remarked, “It is essential to understand who had the motive to delegate individuals like Spicanovic into the overarching security agency.” He further highlighted that Kentera was the one who appointed Spicanovic, asserting that it is Kentera who should answer questions regarding who proposed Spicanovic for the role.
The need for transparency is underscored by Vuksic’s call for an urgent session of the Security and Defense Committee. He insists that a thorough review is necessary to ascertain how Spicanovic was appointed, who conducted his security assessment, and who authorized his access to sensitive data. Vuksic stated, “All relevant documentation needs to be submitted to the committee. This cannot be allowed to happen without oversight.”
In a related development, Spicanovic was reportedly detained by officials from the Special Police Department (SPO) earlier today. Speculation surrounding his appointment has circulated in various media outlets, citing controversial aspects of his professional history. Reports indicate that Spicanovic is a former schoolmate of Kentera and was included among his closest associates in management.
Prior to this appointment, Spicanovic held a position as the head of internal control within the Ministry of the Interior, a role he allegedly assumed unlawfully. His recent detention coincided with the arrest of several former high-ranking police officials, as well as business figure Aleksandar Mijajlovic and senior state prosecutor Andrijana Nastic.
The unfolding events raise critical questions about the processes and motivations behind appointments within the ANB, highlighting concerns regarding oversight and accountability in national security matters.
