Ten-Year-Old Poppy O’Malley-Flack Joins Mensa After Dyslexia Test

A remarkable achievement has been recorded by Poppy O’Malley-Flack, a ten-year-old girl from Holborough Lakes, who has been accepted into Mensa, the world’s largest high-IQ society. This milestone came to light following a dyslexia test that revealed her exceptional intelligence, with an IQ score of 136, placing her in the top 1% of the population.

Poppy, a Year 6 student at Gads Hill School in Higham, was evaluated for dyslexia after her 11 Plus tutor noticed she was struggling with spelling. The three-hour assessment not only confirmed that Poppy had dyslexia but also highlighted her high cognitive abilities. Her mother, Lucy O’Malley-Flack, explained that Poppy developed methods to remember words, bypassing traditional phonics learning.

Unexpected Results Boost Confidence

Initially, Lucy and her family joked about Poppy potentially qualifying for Mensa, not expecting that the results of the dyslexia test would lead to such an outcome. After submitting the report, Poppy received her acceptance into the prestigious society. Lucy expressed her surprise, stating, “We did not expect it. She went into a dyslexia test and came out as part of Mensa.”

Lucy described her daughter as “twice exceptional,” highlighting Poppy’s intelligence alongside her learning challenges. While they had always known Poppy was clever, the high IQ score was unexpected. “We knew she was bright and intelligent, and she was really good at The 1% Club TV show. But, she is not a bookworm and does not go up to her room and study all night. She is just a normal child,” Lucy added.

Poppy’s achievement has not only filled her family with pride but also instilled a newfound confidence in her. Lucy noted that the acceptance into Mensa has given Poppy a significant boost going into her upcoming 11 Plus test, stating, “She is so proud of herself.”
