Lewis Moody Reveals Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis with Emotion

Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a condition that has impacted the lives of notable rugby players, including Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir. Moody, 47, received the diagnosis just two weeks ago and expressed difficulty in fully confronting the reality of his situation.
Emotional Impact of the Diagnosis
In an interview with BBC Sport, Moody shared his struggle to accept the implications of MND. “There’s something about looking the future in the face and not wanting to really process that at the minute,” he said. His tone reflected a blend of resignation and hope, emphasizing that while he understands the gravity of the diagnosis, he is not ready to confront it entirely.
Moody acknowledged the emotional weight of his condition, stating, “You’re given this diagnosis of MND and we’re rightly quite emotional about it.” Yet, he also described a peculiar sense of normalcy in his daily life, saying, “I don’t feel ill. I don’t feel unwell. My symptoms are very minor.” He noted that he experiences slight muscle wasting in his hand and shoulder but feels capable of continuing his activities.
Career Legacy and Future Outlook
Moody enjoyed a decade-long career with the English national team, where he earned a reputation for his resilience and leadership. His diagnosis has brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by athletes dealing with similar health issues, particularly in contact sports.
While he is understandably emotional about the diagnosis, Moody remains optimistic about his capacity to manage the condition. “I’m still capable of doing anything and everything. And hopefully that will continue for as long as is possible,” he stated, a testament to his enduring spirit.
The rugby community and fans are rallying around Moody during this challenging time, reflecting the deep connections forged through sport. As he navigates this new chapter in his life, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of health and the strength found in support from loved ones and colleagues.
Further updates on Moody’s journey and the ongoing conversation around MND in sports are anticipated as he continues to share his experiences.
