Ukraine Launches Powerful ‘Flamingo’ Missile Outpacing Tomahawk
Ukraine has introduced a new cruise missile, dubbed the Flamingo, which is reported to have capabilities exceeding those of the renowned Tomahawk missile. This missile can carry a substantial payload of 1,150 kg and boasts an impressive range of 3,000 km. The development marks a significant advancement in Ukraine’s military capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
The Flamingo missile, designed by the Ukrainian weapons manufacturer Fire Point, has already demonstrated its effectiveness in combat. Reports indicate that it has successfully struck a Russian military base, destroying six hovercraft and creating craters over 30 feet wide. Additionally, it has been deployed against Russian oil refineries, showcasing its versatility and impact on the battlefield.
Interestingly, the Flamingo’s name originated from a manufacturing error that resulted in a pink color, which has since become a point of pride for its creators. The missile’s economical design is significant for Ukraine, which faces financial challenges amidst ongoing warfare. Fire Point highlights the missile’s construction from low-cost materials, leading some to refer to it as a ‘junkyard’ missile. The external engine design allows for various objects to be used as propulsion, and the warhead itself is a repurposed Soviet FAB-1000 aircraft bomb, enabling Ukraine to utilize existing stockpiles effectively.
Cost-Effective Military Innovation
Fire Point is currently producing the Flamingo missile at a rate of one per day, with ambitious plans to ramp up production to seven per day by the end of 2023. If achieved, this production rate would surpass the combined output of cruise missile manufacturing in both the United States and Russia. The economic advantage of the Flamingo is striking; while the Tomahawk missile costs around $2.1 million each, the Flamingo is estimated to be only one-fifth of that price.
The Tomahawk missile, renowned for its ability to strike targets up to 1,000 miles away with a 1,000-pound warhead, operates at a much higher cost. It is designed to skim the surface to evade interception, striking within 14 feet of its intended target. In comparison, the Flamingo not only offers a greater range but also a more manageable price point, which is crucial for a nation like Ukraine that is striving to sustain its defense capabilities while contending with severe financial limitations.
As Ukraine continues to innovate in its military strategies, the Flamingo missile represents a significant leap forward. The combination of high payload capacity, extended range, and cost-effectiveness could reshape the dynamics of its ongoing conflict with Russia, allowing Ukraine to maintain a competitive edge without straining its resources further.
