Avi Loeb Raises Concerns Over 3I/ATLAS Object’s Threat to Earth
Avi Loeb, a prominent astrophysicist from Harvard University, has stirred considerable debate regarding the interstellar object known as 3I/ATLAS. In a recent article published on Medium, he suggested that this object may behave in ways that contradict established physical laws, potentially posing a risk to Earth. The International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) has initiated an observation campaign to closely monitor 3I/ATLAS, which is the third identified interstellar visitor, following 1I/’Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov.
Loeb’s analysis indicates that the trajectory and brightness of 3I/ATLAS strongly suggest an origin beyond our solar system, making it a subject of significant interest in contemporary astrophysics. He stated, “This is not just another space rock. Its orbit and behaviour challenge the models we currently use to understand interstellar objects.” Unlike conventional asteroids, 3I/ATLAS exhibits an unusual acceleration pattern that cannot be solely attributed to solar radiation pressure or gravitational influences. This peculiarity raises questions about whether the object could be propelled or even constructed by artificial means.
The controversy surrounding 3I/ATLAS is further fueled by its seemingly erratic movement, fluctuating brightness, and speed profile that defies expectations for natural cosmic debris. While Loeb refrains from outright claiming that the object is of extraterrestrial origin, his statements suggest a possibility that warrants consideration. He remarked, “If 3I/ATLAS were an engineered probe, it would demonstrate technologies beyond our comprehension.” This provocative notion follows his earlier work on ‘Oumuamua, which he suggested might have been an extraterrestrial probe due to its non-gravitational acceleration.
In the wake of Loeb’s assertions, a post from the X account UFO Mania gained significant traction, claiming that the trajectory of 3I/ATLAS “appears to be curving unnaturally toward Earth.” This assertion, viewed millions of times, has contributed to a growing anxiety among the public, leading to a surge in conspiracy theories. Some users have noted the unusual timing of these revelations, coinciding with NASA’s recent announcement of new monitoring missions for near-Earth objects. Comments on social media reflect this apprehension, as one user questioned, “What if Loeb is right again? Maybe we’re watching history repeat itself with another visitor that breaks every rule.”
Despite the public’s reaction, astronomers affiliated with IAWN and NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office have urged calm. Initial tracking data do not indicate any immediate collision risk with Earth, but the object’s unconventional behaviour underscores the need for ongoing surveillance. Loeb has emphasized that speculation should not surpass empirical evidence, stating, “Science advances by data, not drama. But when data challenge our expectations, we should not look away.”
Loeb’s open-minded approach, often viewed as sensational by critics, continues to captivate public interest. Even sceptics acknowledge that his inquiries have expanded the scope of what scientists might consider plausible. The narrative surrounding 3I/ATLAS has gained traction online, with discussions around the object being “targeting Earth” taking on a life of their own. The current path of 3I/ATLAS brings it relatively close to Earth’s orbital plane, and while further analysis is required to confirm its trajectory, the theoretical risks cannot be dismissed entirely.
Some theorists speculate that if the object is indeed artificial, its apparent course correction might suggest attempts at surveillance or communication. Nevertheless, Loeb insists on maintaining a scientific perspective, reiterating that “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”
In the coming weeks, observatories worldwide, including those in Hawaii, Chile, and Spain, will direct their instruments toward 3I/ATLAS. The IAWN initiative aims to assess its precise composition, reflectivity, and motion. Should its acceleration continue to defy established natural explanations, Loeb’s theories could potentially reshape humanity’s understanding of the cosmos and our position within it. Whether 3I/ATLAS is merely a fragment of cosmic debris or a harbinger from beyond, one aspect remains certain: it challenges the conventional rules of the universe.
