Buducnost Faces Crisis as Performance Drops to New Lows
Buducnost, the most successful football club in Montenegro, is experiencing a significant crisis, prompting immediate changes in leadership. Following a series of disappointing results, the club has seen multiple coaches dismissed without hesitation. Dejan Vukicevic was brought in as a savior during the autumn season to rectify the issues left by his predecessor, Ivan Brnovic. Unfortunately, the situation has only worsened under his guidance, as the club finds itself struggling at the bottom of the league table.
The challenges facing Buducnost are stark. Currently, the team is seventh in the standings, having suffered seven losses and accumulating only 25 points with a goal difference of 21:17. These figures reflect a team that is not performing well. The situation has been exacerbated by the departure of several key players, including suspended athletes Lazar Mijovic and Lazar Savovic, who opted not to renew their contracts.
Vukicevic’s appointment was intended to be a quick fix, similar to the successful transitions seen at clubs like Sutjeska, Mornar, and Bokelj. Instead, each new change at Buducnost has led to a decline rather than an improvement. The squad’s performance raises questions about the current management’s understanding of the club’s legacy and its significance to both Podgorica and Montenegro.
The team’s recent lineup has been characterized by a mix of seasoned players and younger talent, but it has not produced the desired results. The average age of the starting players is concerning, with veterans like Mijatovic at 38, and others in their thirties, leaving little room for youthful exuberance on the field. Young players like Rakcevic and Vujovic have had limited opportunities, with most of their appearances coming before Vukicevic’s tenure.
Vukicevic’s strategy of integrating young stars has not been met with success, as the team continues to struggle. His claims of needing to bolster the squad during the winter transfer window by bringing in five top players raise further questions about the club’s financial capabilities. The management has previously indicated that they are operating on a limited budget, making such acquisitions seem unlikely.
If Vukicevic is to secure the future of Buducnost, he must navigate the complexities of a tight budget while addressing the team’s immediate performance issues. Should the club part ways with underperforming players, it may need to find around €800,000 to facilitate these changes. The stakes are high, as failure to secure a victory against Decic this weekend could jeopardize any chances of winning the cup or the league title.
The underlying issues extend beyond the coaching staff and players. The current management has often viewed the club through a political lens rather than a sporting one, which has resulted in a lack of focus on the team’s competitive needs. This approach has culminated in what many are calling the worst autumn season for Buducnost since the country gained independence.
As Buducnost navigates this challenging period, the urgency for change is palpable. The club, once a beacon of success, now finds itself at a crossroads, where strategic decisions made in the coming weeks will significantly impact its future.
