Michael van Gerwen Faces Personal and Professional Challenges Ahead of 2026
As 2026 approaches, darts champion Michael van Gerwen is confronting significant personal and professional challenges. The three-time world champion has secured just one PDC major trophy this year, marking his lowest tally since he began competing professionally in 2011. This downturn in performance has coincided with personal struggles, as Van Gerwen announced earlier this year the end of his 11-year marriage to Daphne van Gerwen.
Marriage Breakdown and Personal Struggles
In May 2023, Van Gerwen revealed his separation from Daphne via social media. The couple, who married in 2014 and share two children, faced a difficult period as they navigated this transition. Van Gerwen expressed his sadness about the situation, stating, “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship. As a result, I have withdrawn from the upcoming tournaments. I am sorry to disappoint my fans, but I trust that they will understand my decision.”
Daphne, a former hairdresser, had been a constant presence at events, supporting Van Gerwen throughout his career. Their relationship dates back to 2008. This separation comes after a challenging year for the athlete, who underwent jaw surgery in 2024, impacting his performance.
Financial Success Amid Challenges
Despite the personal turmoil, Van Gerwen’s professional achievements have led to significant financial success. He holds an impressive record with 48 PDC major singles titles, ranking second all-time behind only Phil Taylor. Van Gerwen surpasses Taylor with 90 PDC Pro Tour victories, which has contributed to his net worth, estimated at approximately £7 million.
His darts prize money has reached nearly £10 million, bolstered by an £80,000 winner’s cheque from the World Series of Darts in September 2023. In addition to his prize earnings, Van Gerwen has secured lucrative commercial partnerships with brands such as Leyland Trade, dartshop.tv, and XQ Darts Max.
The financial backing from these endorsements highlights his status as a leading figure in the sport, despite recent setbacks. His wealth enables him to maintain a comfortable lifestyle, even as he grapples with personal difficulties.
Competitive Spirit and Future Aspirations
Van Gerwen’s competitive nature remains undiminished. He faced a tough defeat to Luke Littler in the 2023 World Darts Championship final, losing 7-3 to the then-17-year-old. This marked his second unsuccessful attempt to secure a fourth world title within three years. Despite trailing Littler in their head-to-head encounters, Van Gerwen insists he remains a formidable competitor in the sport.
When asked about his standing in the game, he confidently stated, “Yes, of course. Ask Luke Littler who he doesn’t want to play. He will definitely say my name, 100 per cent. And if he doesn’t, he’s lying. That’s the way it is.” This determination underscores his commitment to return to the top of his game.
As the year draws to a close, Van Gerwen is set to make a guest appearance on the darts-themed television game show Bullseye on Christmas Day, hosted by Freddie Flintoff. This opportunity could serve as a welcome distraction from his recent challenges and a chance to re-engage with his fan base.
Michael van Gerwen’s journey highlights the interplay between personal challenges and professional aspirations. As he navigates this turbulent period, fans and supporters will be watching closely to see how he adapts both on and off the oche.
