Joey Dunlop Exhibition Opens to Celebrate Legendary TT Racer

The Joey Dunlop Exhibition has officially opened at the Mercury Club, showcasing an extensive collection of memorabilia dedicated to the iconic motorcycle racer. Located adjacent to the winners’ enclosure at the TT Grandstand, the exhibit is available to the public free of charge until the conclusion of race week. This tribute to Dunlop, who remains one of the most revered figures in the history of the Isle of Man TT, was inaugurated during the qualifying week with over 100 attendees, including the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Philippa.
Among the notable figures present at the opening was John McGuinness MBE, a 23-time TT winner and former rival of Dunlop. Reflecting on their shared experiences, McGuinness expressed his feelings about the exhibition, stating, “I can’t deny that I’ve found it quite emotional looking at some of the images and items in the exhibition. It’s amazing.” He contributed a pair of his leathers worn during the 2000 Formula One race, where he finished third alongside Dunlop, who secured a place on the podium.
In a fitting tribute to his late uncle, Michael Dunlop MBE has constructed a replica of the Honda 1000cc SP1 that Joey rode to victory at the 2000 TT. McGuinness has also provided the fairing from the bike adorned in Vimto colours, used in the Senior race—the last event Joey participated in before his tragic death in Estonia at the age of 48. Michael Dunlop plans to ride the replica during a tribute lap next Friday, honoring his uncle’s legacy.
The exhibition features a fascinating range of items, including Dunlop’s personal toolbox and the motorcycles he raced in his final TT. Other notable attendees included contemporary riders such as Eddie Laycock, Ian Lougher, and Dave Leach, as well as modern competitors like Dean Harrison, Nathan Harrison, and Horst Saiger.
Former Minister for Fun on the Isle of Man, David Cretney, and photographer Peter Duke also paid their respects, highlighting Dunlop’s status as one of the most successful and beloved road racers of all time. The exhibition serves not only as a celebration of Dunlop’s achievements but also as a reminder of his enduring impact on the sport and the community surrounding it.
This heartfelt tribute continues to draw attention and admiration from fans and fellow racers alike, ensuring that the spirit of Joey Dunlop remains vibrant in the hearts of motorcycle racing enthusiasts.
