Major European airports, including Brussels, Berlin, and London’s Heathrow, experienced significant disruptions on March 15, 2024, due to a cyber-related incident. This issue impacted check-in and baggage drop systems, leading to numerous flight delays and cancellations across several busy air hubs.

According to Collins Aerospace, the service provider for the affected systems, the disruptions were linked to its MUSE software. The company confirmed, “We have become aware of a cyber-related disruption to our MUSE software in select airports.” While the disruptions were serious, Collins noted that the impact was limited to electronic check-in processes, and operations could continue through manual check-in methods.

At Brussels Airport, the fallout was particularly pronounced. The airport reported the cancellation of at least ten flights, while another seventeen experienced delays exceeding one hour. Passengers were advised to check their flight status with airlines before arriving at the airport, as only manual check-in and boarding were operational.

Similarly, Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in Europe, reported that its check-in and boarding systems were also affected by the same technical issue. The airport indicated that these disruptions could potentially delay departing flights, urging travelers to account for possible wait times.

A message on the official website of Berlin Airport echoed the concerns, stating, “Due to a technical issue at a system provider operating across Europe, there are longer waiting times at check-in.” This notification highlighted the widespread nature of the technical difficulties, affecting multiple major airports simultaneously.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats, raising concerns about the security measures in place at key transport hubs. As airports work to restore normal operations, the focus will be on ensuring the safety and efficiency of passenger travel amidst the ongoing challenges posed by cyber disruptions.
