Asia Leads Global Surge in Industrial Robot Installations for 2024

Global industrial robot installations surged significantly in 2024, with a total of 542,000 robots deployed worldwide, reflecting a growing reliance on automation across various sectors. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), this figure marks a continuation of a steady increase in industrial automation, with Asia dominating the trends. The data highlights the shifting dynamics in global manufacturing, indicating a pronounced regional disparity in robot adoption and deployment.

Asia’s Dominance in Robot Installations

Asia accounted for an impressive 74% of all new industrial robot installations in 2024, far surpassing the numbers recorded in Europe and the Americas. The IFR reported that the global operational stock of industrial robots has now reached approximately 4.66 million units, representing a 9% increase from the previous year. IFR President Takayuki Ito remarked, “The new World Robotics statistics show 2024 the second-highest annual installation count of industrial robots in history.” This ongoing trend reflects manufacturers’ commitment to enhancing digitalization and automation, particularly within advanced industrial economies.

China stands out in this landscape, leading with 54% of all new robot installations in 2024. Specifically, 295,000 units were deployed, marking the highest total in the nation’s history. The local robotics industry has gained substantial ground, with Chinese manufacturers achieving a 57% market share, surpassing foreign brands for the first time. China’s operational stock of robots now exceeds two million units, positioning it as the largest national stock globally. The IFR anticipates continued growth in the Chinese robotics market, projecting a 10% annual increase until at least 2028.

Global Response and Future Projections

Outside of China, other Asian nations are also making significant strides in robotics. Japan continues to be the second-largest robotics market, contributing 44,500 new units in 2024, despite a slight decline compared to previous years. South Korea maintains its position as the fourth-largest market, while India achieved record installations, showcasing its growing capabilities in automation technology.

In contrast, Europe faced challenges with an 8% decline in new installations, totaling 85,000 units. The Americas also experienced a 10% decrease, but the United States remains the leading market in the Western hemisphere. These regional variations are influenced by sector-specific trends, particularly in the automotive industry and policy incentives.

Looking ahead, the IFR projects a 6% increase in global robot installations for 2025, estimating a total of 575,000 units, with expectations to surpass 700,000 units by 2028. Takayuki Ito emphasized, “The transition of many industries into the digital and automated age has been marked by a huge surge in demand.”
