Former *Countryfile* presenter Julia Bradbury has opened up about her deeply emotional experience ahead of undergoing a significant surgery for breast cancer. In a candid article, she described feeling “utterly terrified” as she faced the prospect of saying goodbye to her old self before the life-altering operation.

In 2021, Bradbury received a devastating diagnosis after a routine mammogram revealed a 6cm tumour, following her earlier identification of benign micro-cysts. The diagnosis not only confirmed breast cancer but also led to a mastectomy, a decision she detailed in her recent reflections. She made a poignant appearance at the National Television Awards that year, celebrating her “old body” by wearing a jumpsuit, encapsulating the emotional weight of her journey.

Facing her surgery, Bradbury found herself “staring into the unknown.” In her first-person account shared with *The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine*, she recounted the initial shock of hearing the words: “You have cancer.” The emotional turmoil brought thoughts of mortality and concern for her children to the forefront of her mind. Despite the overwhelming fear, she chose to face each day with resilience, learning to embrace the present moment.

Bradbury reflected on the sadness surrounding her impending mastectomy and breast reconstruction, expressing feelings of despondency about the loss of her breast and the potential impact on her confidence. She described the process leading up to the surgery as “overwhelming,” particularly the moment she learned about the necessary surgical procedures.

“It was very overwhelming hearing someone say: ‘We’re going to cut off your breast,'” she shared. Bradbury detailed her anxiety about choosing silicone implants and contemplating the resulting scars. In a moment of gratitude, she acknowledged her body for the joy it had given her, which ultimately helped her embrace the journey ahead.

In her book, *Hack Yourself Healthy*, Bradbury elaborated on her experience at the NTAs, recalling how the outfit she wore had been cut on the same side as her newly diagnosed breast cancer. She poignantly recognized that this would be her last opportunity to appear “red-carpet-ready” in her “old body.”

After undergoing the surgery, she faced physical challenges, struggling to perform basic exercises. “There was a point in my life that I had never expected to experience at the age of 50: I could not lie flat on the floor and put my arms above my head,” she admitted.

Encouragingly, Bradbury noted a positive shift in her health since the surgery, stating that she is now “fitter, more flexible and stronger” than before her diagnosis. In fact, she asserted that she is “probably in the best shape” of her life, a testament to her resilience and determination throughout this challenging chapter.

Bradbury’s story resonates with many who face similar battles, showcasing the human spirit’s capacity for courage and transformation in the face of adversity.
