Nigeria Launches Africa’s Largest Measles-Rubella Immunisation Campaign

The Nigerian federal government is set to launch Africa’s largest integrated health campaign on **October 6, 2025**, aimed at combating measles and rubella infections. This initiative will introduce the measles-rubella vaccine into the country’s routine immunization schedule, significantly targeting Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) and interrupting the transmission of these highly contagious diseases.
The campaign will initially target **63 million children** aged between 9 months and under 15 years in its first phase, followed by an additional **43 million children** in a subsequent phase. The goal is to achieve **95 percent coverage** across implementing states, particularly to address the gap of zero-dose children in various northern regions of Nigeria.
Measles is known for its high contagion rate, often leading to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis. Symptoms include high fever, rash, cough, and red eyes. Similarly, rubella, a viral infection, presents with a rash and low fever, transmitting easily through respiratory droplets. Both diseases pose significant health risks, especially to young children.
Strengthening Routine Immunisation Efforts
In addition to the measles-rubella vaccine, the campaign will reinforce routine immunization practices, including the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine for girls aged **9 years**. The **Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency**, Onyebuchi Ezigbo, emphasized that this nationwide campaign serves as an opportunity to enhance overall immunization efforts in Nigeria.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving child health and reducing the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases. By integrating these efforts, Nigeria aims to safeguard its younger population while ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
As the launch date approaches, health officials are preparing to mobilize resources and raise public awareness about the importance of vaccinations. The success of this campaign will rely heavily on community engagement and participation, highlighting the critical role that parents and guardians play in protecting their children’s health.
