Lloyds Banking Group to Close 49 Branches Across UK in 2026
Lloyds Banking Group has announced plans to close an additional 49 bank branches across the United Kingdom next year. The closures will affect branches under the Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands, with the shutdowns scheduled to occur between January and October 2026. This decision marks a continued trend toward reducing physical banking locations in response to changing customer preferences, particularly the growing shift to online banking.
Staff members impacted by the closures will be offered positions at other branches or within different areas of the business, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Lloyds. The closures include a total of 26 Lloyds branches, 10 Halifax branches, and 13 Bank of Scotland locations. Once these closures are finalized, Lloyds Banking Group will operate 705 branches across its brands, including 359 Lloyds, 269 Halifax, and 77 Bank of Scotland branches.
In light of these closures, the cash access network Link has recommended establishing 11 new banking hubs in various towns to help maintain banking services. These proposed hubs are set to be located in Buxton, Camborne, Chepstow, Deal, Gorseinon, Grangemouth, Harborne, Hawick, Ryde, Stamford, and Southampton Totton.
This announcement follows a similar move by NatWest, which revealed plans to close 46 mobile branches under its NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland brands, also slated for January 2026. The transition to digital banking continues to accelerate, with a Lloyds spokesperson noting that over 21 million customers now prefer using their mobile apps for banking needs.
“The way people are banking has changed,” the spokesperson stated, adding that the bank aims to combine “the best in digital convenience with our people.” Customers will still have access to banking services through any Lloyds, Halifax, or Bank of Scotland branch, the Post Office, and banking hubs, as well as the option to deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations across the country.
As the closure dates approach, customers and employees will be closely monitoring the impact of these decisions on local communities and banking accessibility. The ongoing evolution of banking services reflects broader trends in consumer behavior, highlighting the increasing reliance on digital platforms for financial management.
