The highly anticipated film One Battle After Another is now available for preorder on 4K Blu-ray at Walmart ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on October 6, 2023. The movie, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and featuring a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro, promises to be a significant contender during the upcoming awards season.

Walmart briefly offered a Limited Edition Steelbook for preorder, priced at $44.25, but it has since either sold out or been removed from availability, likely due to a premature listing. The standard edition of the 4K Blu-ray remains available for $37. As of now, Amazon has not yet opened preorders for the film, but updates will follow once it becomes accessible.

Film Overview and Critical Reception

“One Battle After Another” currently holds an impressive 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic meter.

This action thriller, infused with dark comedy, spans 162 minutes and follows DiCaprio’s character, Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary whose life is marked by paranoia stemming from substance abuse. Ferguson embarks on a mission to rescue his daughter, Willa, portrayed by Chase Infiniti, from his nemesis, Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, played by Sean Penn.

The film draws inspiration from Thomas Pynchon‘s 1990 novel Vineland, with adaptations to key plot points, although it is not a traditional representation of the source material. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s 2009 novel Inherent Vice, which was noted for its closer fidelity to the text. Fans of Pynchon, who is notoriously reclusive, may find it unlikely that they will hear his thoughts on this latest adaptation.

Availability of Previous Works

This release marks Anderson‘s tenth feature film, all of which he has written and directed. Excluding his debut film Hard Eight, Anderson has produced his projects, with One Battle After Another being only the third to receive a 4K Blu-ray release. Previous titles include Phantom Thread (released in 2018) and the acclaimed Punch-Drunk Love, which was released earlier this year as part of The Criterion Collection.

For those interested in Anderson’s filmography, here is a list of his works available on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray:

Hard Eight (1996) (Blu-ray) – $33
Boogie Nights (1997) (Blu-ray) – $23
Magnolia (1999) (Blu-ray) – $13
Punch-Drunk Love (2002) (4K Blu-ray) – $30.55
There Will Be Blood (2007) (Blu-ray) – $10
The Master (2012) (Blu-ray) – $10.27
Inherent Vice (2014) (Blu-ray) – $10
Phantom Thread (2017) (4K Blu-ray) – $19
Licorice Pizza (2021) (Blu-ray) – $9.29

Fans of Pynchon also have exciting news, as a new novel titled Shadow Ticket is set for release on October 7, 2023. This will be Pynchon’s first novel since 2013, adding to the anticipation surrounding his literary contributions.

As both One Battle After Another and Shadow Ticket approach their respective release dates, enthusiasts of both Anderson’s cinematic style and Pynchon’s unique storytelling can look forward to an engaging season in the entertainment landscape.
