Discover the Art of Lyricism at The Triplex This Week
This week, The Triplex is showcasing a series of films that delve into the profound impact of songwriting and the creative process behind popular music. Highlighting the struggles and triumphs of lyricists, the films feature acclaimed artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Richard Linklater, while also delivering a dose of humor with the latest installment of a cult classic.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” chronicles the life of the iconic rock star as he navigates the trauma of his early years through the creation of his acclaimed album, “Nebraska.” Jeremy Allen White, best known for his role in “The Bear,” takes on the titular role, offering a glimpse into the heart of a musician grappling with his past. The film is directed by Scott Cooper and emphasizes the emotional weight carried by artists as they strive to connect with their audiences through poignant lyrics.
In tandem, Richard Linklater‘s film, “Blue Moon,” focuses on the legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart, played by Ethan Hawke. Hart is celebrated for his contributions to timeless songs such as “My Funny Valentine” and “The Lady is a Tramp.” The narrative unfolds on the night that Hart’s collaborator, Richard Rodgers, premieres “Oklahoma!,” marking a pivotal moment in their 20-year partnership. Both films highlight the meticulous effort involved in crafting lyrics that resonate, while also portraying the personal demons that haunt their protagonists.
As Hart poignantly reflects on the enduring success of “Oklahoma!,” he questions the appeal of “inoffensive art,” revealing the tension between commercial success and artistic integrity. The films resonate as a call for music that not only entertains but also challenges listeners to engage with the complexities of life, including love, loss, and personal struggle.
Comedy and Cult Classics: “Spinal Tap II” and Other Screenings
Opening on October 24, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” brings back Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as the beloved fictional band members who reunite for one last performance, under the watchful eye of documentary filmmaker Rob Reiner. This film, part of The Triplex’s Limited Engagement series, promises a humorous take on the rock band phenomenon and the challenges of aging in the music industry.
The schedule also includes “Re-Animator,” an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s work, which closes out the “Gorecore” series. The film, directed by Stuart Gordon, follows the exploits of medical student Herbert West, who attempts to defy death with his controversial experiments. This screening is set for October 24 at 8:30 p.m., providing a thrilling conclusion to the series.
Additionally, “The New Hard-Boiled: The Birth of American Neo-Noir” series kicks off with “Point Blank” on October 25. Directed by John Boorman, this classic features Lee Marvin as a vengeful criminal seeking retribution from those who betrayed him.
For fans of interactive cinema, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be screened on October 25, complete with a costume contest and prop bags provided for an immersive experience.
As part of the ongoing celebration of cinematic history, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which won five Academy Awards in 1975, will screen on October 26. Jack Nicholson stars as R.P. McMurphy, a convict who feigns mental illness in a bid to escape a prison sentence, only to find himself in a battle of wills with the formidable Nurse Ratched, portrayed by Louise Fletcher.
The Triplex continues to be a hub for diverse cinematic experiences, offering audiences an opportunity to engage with the art of storytelling through both poignant and entertaining films. Each screening invites viewers to reflect on the emotional journeys depicted on screen, celebrating the profound impact of music and film on our lives.
