Exodus Developers Confirm No AI in Matthew McConaughey’s Performance
Exodus developers have clarified that despite the involvement of actor Matthew McConaughey in a separate AI voice deal, his contributions to the upcoming game are entirely original. The game, which is being developed by Archetype, a studio comprised of former Mass Effect creators, has sparked discussions about the use of AI in video games, particularly following McConaughey’s collaboration with Elevenlabs, a leading AI voice-generation technology firm.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Chad Robertson, co-founder of Archetype, emphasized that “100 percent of what’s in Exodus – is bespoke VO recording just for us.” This statement aims to quell any assumptions that McConaughey’s voice could be partially AI-generated within the game. Robertson explained that McConaughey has a unique agreement with Elevenlabs that allows his voice to be utilized in a different context, but this does not extend to the character he portrays in Exodus.
As the gaming industry increasingly explores AI technologies, Robertson provided insight into Archetype’s approach. “We don’t have plans to use generative AI for any elements of [Exodus],” he stated. However, he acknowledged that the studio may reconsider this stance if future circumstances demand it to maintain quality or adhere to budget and timeline constraints.
Robertson’s comments come amidst growing interest and debate over the role of AI in creative industries. The studio’s current position reflects a cautious approach to adopting new technologies. He noted that “we have to be smart and intelligent about how we adopt it ourselves” as AI tools become more prevalent across various sectors.
The anticipation for Exodus is mounting, despite some skepticism about its creative uniqueness. Critics have expressed concerns that the game may not offer sufficient innovation beyond its impressive production values. As of now, Exodus is set for a 2027 release, with its trailer having been showcased at the Geoffies event, leaving fans and industry observers eagerly awaiting more information.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the conversation around AI’s impact on storytelling and character development remains crucial. With developers like Archetype taking a clear stance against AI-generated content, the future of gaming artistry may depend on maintaining a balance between technological advancements and authentic creative expression.
