The well-known Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park in Ripon, North Yorkshire is now up for sale, with a listing price of £3 million. The sale presents a unique opportunity for potential buyers, particularly those looking to invest in the leisure industry. The park, which first opened its gates in 1969, has been a staple attraction for families in the North East, offering a range of rides and activities over its expansive grounds.

The property agents describe the listing as “an opportunity to take ownership of, and develop a long-established theme park business,” noting the potential for additional holiday accommodation, following planning permission granted in January 2024 for the installation of 31 luxury glamping pods.

Previously owned by Brighton Pier Group Plc, Lightwater Valley has evolved from a traditional theme park to a family park, a transition marked by the removal of several larger thrill rides. The park’s former flagship attraction, The Ultimate, which was once the world’s longest roller coaster, was closed during the pandemic and ultimately dismantled due to refurbishment costs. The recent removal of the iconic Eagles Claw ride further signaled this shift in direction.

The park’s current owners acquired it for £5 million in 2021, indicating a significant depreciation in value, as the current listing reflects a loss of £2 million within just four years. Despite these challenges, the park continues to generate a yearly revenue of around £5 million, showcasing its potential for profitability under new management.

Lightwater Valley underwent a major rebranding in 2022, introducing a new logo, mascot, and the updated name “Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park.” This rebranding effort aimed to attract a broader audience and invigorate interest in the park’s offerings.

In a statement regarding the sale, a spokesperson for Lightwater Valley confirmed the site was on the market but declined to provide further details. As the listing captures attention, it remains to be seen who might step in to take over this beloved family destination. The unique opportunity to own a piece of history in the leisure sector could appeal to both seasoned investors and enthusiastic newcomers alike.

The park was originally founded by the father of Amanda Staveley, the former co-owner of Newcastle United, who sold it in 1997.
