President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, posthumously awarded the Order of the Montenegrin Great Star to Amfilohije, the late Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, recognizing his significant contributions to the country’s international reputation and the preservation of its spiritual tradition. This highest state honor was conferred during a ceremony on March 15, 2024, as a tribute to Amfilohije’s role in fostering social peace and shaping contemporary Montenegrin history.

In a statement released by the President’s Public Relations Office, Milatović emphasized the importance of remembering a man who left an indelible mark on the history of Montenegro. He described Amfilohije as a figure whose voice, strength, and wisdom continue to resonate among the people.

Milatović noted, “By awarding the Order of the Montenegrin Great Star to Metropolitan Amfilohije, Montenegro acknowledges his immense contribution to enhancing the country’s international standing, preserving spiritual tradition, and building social peace during critical historical moments.”

Born in 1938 in the village of Radovići in lower Morača, Amfilohije was not only a prominent ecclesiastical leader but also a bridge between spirituality and knowledge, as Milatović highlighted. He pursued his education in cities such as Belgrade, Bern, Rome, Paris, and Athens, making him one of the most educated bishops in the Orthodox world. His fluency in multiple languages, including Greek, Russian, Italian, German, and French, enabled him to engage effectively with representatives of various faiths and cultures.

Milatović reflected on Amfilohije’s ability to unite people during complex historical periods in Montenegro. He recalled how, amid profound divisions and strong emotions, Amfilohije called for peace and dignity, serving as a voice of reason that helped maintain the nation’s integrity. The President pointed out that during the challenging societal processes, such as the independence referendum in 2006, Amfilohije’s leadership was crucial in preserving peace and stability.

“His calls for understanding and mutual respect were vital in ensuring Montenegro navigated the referendum without internal conflict,” stated Milatović. He emphasized that without Amfilohije’s guidance, Montenegro might not view its European future with optimism today.

The President also underscored Amfilohije’s role as a symbol of spiritual resistance and moral integrity, particularly during the peaceful protests known as liturgies in 2019 and 2020. Under his leadership, these gatherings became a symbol of civil dissent, advocating for freedom, equality, and justice, and demonstrating that Montenegro could transform itself without violence.

Milatović concluded his address, saying, “Today, on behalf of the state of Montenegro, I extend deep respect and gratitude by posthumously awarding the Order of the Montenegrin Great Star to Metropolitan Amfilohije for his contributions to preserving Montenegro’s spiritual and cultural tradition, his advocacy for peace during critical historical moments, and for strengthening the country’s international standing.”

In attendance at the ceremony was Amfilohije’s brother, Pavle Radović, representing the family. The Order was presented to the current Metropolitan, Joanikije, who expressed gratitude to the President for recognizing the significant contributions of Amfilohije.

Joanikije remarked on Amfilohije’s charisma and high esteem, noting that he was well-received by leaders in all major Orthodox countries. He added, “The awarding of the Order of the Montenegrin Great Star to our blessedly departed Metropolitan Amfilohije reminds us of the light that he carried in his soul, illuminating both his people and homeland.”

In his closing remarks, Milatović highlighted that Amfilohije’s legacy continues to inspire Montenegrins to defend their dignity through truth, faith, and reason. The President quoted the lines of the revered poet Nikola Đurišić, emphasizing the enduring message of living a meaningful life.

Amfilohije’s profound impact on Montenegrin society is evident in his lifelong commitment to education, interfaith dialogue, and community cohesion. His legacy will continue to shape Montenegro as the nation looks to the future with hope and determination.
