Strictly Come Dancing Kicks Off 2025 with Record-Breaking Performance

The 2025 season of Strictly Come Dancing launched with a spectacular live show that featured stunning performances from all 15 couples. Among them, one duo stood out for breaking an 18-year record, capturing the attention of viewers and judges alike.
During the show, aired by BBC, former footballer Karen Carney and her professional partner Carlos Gu delivered a vibrant jive to Blondie’s “One Way or Another.” Their performance closed the evening with energy and flair, earning them a remarkable score of 31 points. This achievement marked the first time in 18 years that a footballer topped the leaderboard in the competition.
Carney, 38, and Gu, 32, dazzled the audience with their energetic display, showcasing intricate footwork and infectious enthusiasm. The judges were equally impressed, with Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke awarding them eights, a strong showing for the first week of the competition.
The studio erupted in celebration as the performance marked a significant moment in the show’s history, compelling viewers to reassess their predictions for the season’s eventual winner. Social media lit up with reactions, including praise from fans who noted Carney’s unexpected prowess on the dance floor. One viewer commented on X, “Karen and Carlos aced that performance. Just wow. I’m speechless.”
Memorable Moments and Competitive Spirit
While Carney and Gu stole the spotlight, other performances also sparked excitement. Lewis Cope and Katya Jones secured second place with a lively jive, scoring 28 points. The spirit of competition was palpable as the audience witnessed the variety of talent on display.
Another poignant moment came from Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, an Olympian, who moved to tears after his cha cha performance to Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It.” After receiving a score of 19, he expressed his gratitude for being able to perform again following an injury that had sidelined him. “It just feels so nice to be myself,” he shared with host Tess Daly.
The evening also featured Amber Davies, who made her debut after stepping in last minute for Dani Dyer-Bowen, who sustained an ankle injury. Davies impressed the judges with a waltz to Adele’s “When We Were Young,” earning a commendable score of 27.
Breaking New Ground
Among the contestants, model Ellie Goldstein, the first person with Down syndrome to compete on the main series, brought infectious joy to the stage. Her presence and performance underscored the show’s commitment to inclusivity and representation.
This season also carries a personal touch, as professional dancer Dianne Buswell announced her pregnancy, adding a layer of excitement to the competition. Despite her news, she and her partner, Stefan Dennis, plan to continue participating this series.
With no eliminations during the first week, the scores from this week will be combined with those from the next, leading to a dance-off where one couple will be sent home. As the competition heats up, viewers are left to ponder who will emerge as the season’s champion.
“It’s been an honour, honestly. I’m really emotional,” Karen Carney remarked after her performance, reflecting the sentiments shared by many on this exhilarating opening night.
As Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, fans remain eager to see how the competition unfolds and which couples will rise to the occasion.
