Eyelid Surgery Sees 13% Surge as Demand for Blepharoplasty Grows

The popularity of eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, has surged significantly, with the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reporting a **13% increase** in procedures between **2023 and 2024**. This trend mirrors a global phenomenon, where **1.7 million** eyelid surgeries were performed last year, reflecting a remarkable **24% rise** compared to the previous year. As individuals increasingly seek effective solutions for sagging eyelids and dark circles, blepharoplasty has solidified its position as one of the most sought-after aesthetic procedures.
The appeal of surgical intervention over non-surgical methods is apparent. Many individuals find that non-invasive alternatives, such as dermal fillers, only offer temporary relief. While fillers can enhance certain areas, they do not address the underlying structural issues that contribute to tired-looking eyes. In contrast, blepharoplasty provides a more permanent solution by removing excess skin and repositioning fat around the eyes.
For insights into the procedure, we consulted **Mr. Dan Marsh** and **Mr. Mo Akhavani**, co-founders of The Plastic Surgery Group. They explain that blepharoplasty can serve both functional and cosmetic purposes. Mr. Akhavani notes, “Sometimes it’s carried out to stop the eyelids from limiting vision, but more often it’s used to rejuvenate the eye area by addressing sagging upper lids, puffy lower lids, or under-eye bags.”
Understanding the Procedure and Its Benefits
Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are typically adults who feel their eyes appear tired due to fine wrinkles, excess skin, or bulging fat pads. A comprehensive consultation is crucial to determine suitability for surgery.
The primary advantage of blepharoplasty compared to non-surgical options lies in its permanence. “Blepharoplasty can remove skin, whereas fillers can’t,” states Mr. Marsh. He emphasizes that while fillers may restore volume temporarily, surgery effectively removes or repositions fat and excises loose skin, resulting in longer-lasting outcomes.
The procedure itself is precise and often tailored to individual needs. Mr. Akhavani explains, “Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can often be performed under local anaesthetic, while lower eyelid surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia.” Many patients opt to have all four eyelids treated in a single session. The process begins with marking the skin and fat to be removed, ensuring incisions are made in discreet locations for minimal visibility during recovery.
Recovery and Long-Term Considerations
Post-operative recovery is generally swift, with most patients returning home the same day. Initial swelling and bruising are expected during the first week or two, and patients are advised to take around **two weeks off work**. Mr. Akhavani suggests sleeping propped up to facilitate healing, and light exercise can usually be resumed after about four weeks.
The time required to see final results varies, with most patients noticing significant improvements within one to two months. However, Mr. Marsh cautions that swelling may take up to a year to completely resolve, and the appearance of scars will continue to improve over time, depending on individual factors such as age and genetics.
While blepharoplasty is generally safe, Mr. Akhavani notes potential complications, including temporary blurred vision, swelling, minor infection, or asymmetry of scars. It is essential to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon to minimize these risks.
The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, but they do not halt the natural aging process. Mr. Marsh explains, “The surgery can have an immediate and rejuvenating effect, but it can’t stop natural ageing.” Some patients may find they require additional procedures in the future, such as a brow lift, if droopiness develops again.
As with any aesthetic treatment, thorough research and consultation with an experienced surgeon are vital. The growing interest in blepharoplasty reflects a broader desire for effective, long-term solutions to common aesthetic concerns, marking an evolution in how individuals approach their appearance.
