A Highland family has successfully raised £40,000 in just one week for critical surgery needed by Michael Jepson, a 55-year-old father diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. The fundraising effort came after Michael, from Cannich, underwent an eight-hour operation last year to remove a large cyst and tumour from his frontal lobe. Unfortunately, a biopsy revealed he had Stage 4 Glioblastoma, a serious and often fatal condition.

Following his diagnosis, Michael endured extensive treatment, including 60 rounds of combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy, followed by an additional six months of chemotherapy. Despite these efforts, a scan shortly before Christmas indicated regrowth of the tumour, which the NHS deemed inoperable. Determined to explore all options, the Jepson family located a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic in London who is willing to perform the surgery that could significantly extend Michael’s life.

The cost of the surgery and related expenses is £40,000, which needed to be raised quickly to secure the operation. An online fundraiser was launched shortly after the New Year, and the community responded with remarkable generosity.

Community Support Surpasses Expectations

As of yesterday, the total raised on the Go Fund Me page was reported at £37,825. The Heather’s Heroes group, established in memory of Heather Dallas, who passed away from cancer in 2024, contributed an additional £5,000 to help the family reach their goal. This organization focuses on providing essential care and resources to families affected by cancer.

The response from the community has been overwhelming, with over 700 individual donations. Many of these contributions included anonymous gifts of £1,000 or more, alongside smaller donations, such as £71 raised from a bake sale at Cannich Bridge Primary School. The speed and scale of the support have left the Jepson family both stunned and grateful.

Lisa Jepson, Michael’s wife, expressed her astonishment at the community’s response, stating, “We’re absolutely over the moon. In shock actually, but in a good way. We always knew we had a good community around us, but it’s January, it’s just after Christmas, and times are tough for everyone. We were hopeful but didn’t expect to reach our goal so quickly.”

Next Steps for Michael’s Surgery

Attention now turns to the logistics of securing Michael’s surgery, including travel and accommodation arrangements. The surgeon indicated that the operation could take place within a week of their last conversation on December 31, 2023. However, the family is now waiting to confirm the timing based on the fundraising progress.

“There’s a lot to sort out still, but honestly, Michael and I just keep looking at each other saying, ‘I can’t believe we’ve done this!’” Lisa said, highlighting their disbelief at the community’s support.

The family has expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in the fundraising efforts. Special thanks were given to family friend Laura Black and her sister Emma, who organized a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. They also capitalized on a regular quiz night at the Loch Ness Inn in Drumnadrochit, where the quizmaster took every opportunity to share the Jepson family’s story.

“This has been absolutely mind-blowing,” Lisa remarked, reflecting on the community spirit that has rallied around her family during this challenging time. With funding secured, the Jepson family is now focused on ensuring Michael receives the care he urgently needs.
