Hywel Dda Launches Learning Disability Packs in A&E Departments
Hywel Dda University Health Board has introduced Learning Disability Packs at emergency departments across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire. This initiative follows a successful pilot program at the emergency department of Glangwili Hospital. The packs aim to enhance the experience of adults with learning disabilities during emergency hospital visits by providing clear information and reassurance.
The Learning Disability Packs were meticulously developed by the health board’s Learning Disabilities Team. They are designed to make the sometimes overwhelming experience of visiting an emergency department more accessible for patients and their families. Each pack includes straightforward instructions and support materials tailored to the needs of individuals with learning disabilities.
Accessible Support Across Multiple Locations
The packs are now available at several key locations, including Bronglais Hospital, Glangwili Hospital, Withybush Hospital’s emergency departments, and the Acute Medical Assessment Unit at Prince Philip Hospital. To ensure that these resources are easily accessible, the Learning Disabilities Team is collaborating closely with front-of-house staff. They are also conducting drop-in sessions aimed at informing and training staff about the new initiative.
To raise awareness of the availability of these Learning Disability Packs, posters will be displayed throughout the relevant departments. Patients or their caregivers can also request a pack at the reception desk, ensuring that support is readily available whenever needed.
This initiative reflects the commitment of Hywel Dda University Health Board to improve patient care and inclusivity for individuals with learning disabilities. By providing essential resources that cater to the specific needs of patients, the health board aims to create a more supportive environment in emergency healthcare settings.
