Plans for New Medical Centre in Peterborough to Enhance Patient Care

Plans have been unveiled for a new medical centre in Peterborough aimed at accommodating a growing patient population. The existing Hampton Medical Centre, located within the Serpentine Green shopping centre, has been identified as inadequate due to its limited space and the increasing number of local residents requiring healthcare services. A planning application was submitted to the Peterborough City Council on October 2 for a purpose-built facility at Silver Hill, intended to serve as the new base for the medical centre.

The submitted planning documents highlight the centre’s need for expansion. “The practice is expanding and recruiting more clinical staff to meet the growing demand,” the documents state. The new facility is designed to accommodate additional clinicians, which will enable the practice to provide more appointments, a wider range of services, and allow for increased patient registrations.

Details of the Proposed Development

The development is planned to unfold in two phases. The first phase will involve constructing a new medical facility along with parking, landscaping, and necessary infrastructure. The subsequent phase will introduce residential accommodation specifically for medical students training with the practice. Currently, the Hampton Medical Centre serves approximately 12,400 patients, but the new facility aims to support up to 15,000 patients once Phase 1 is complete, with potential for further expansion after Phase 2.

Design plans indicate that the new development will consist of a two-storey, flat-roofed building, encompassing 2,100 square meters of medical facilities and an additional 245 square meters for residential accommodation, which will include six self-contained student studios. A planning statement outlines the objectives of the project, stating, “The development as a whole, and at each stage, will provide a purpose-built, multidisciplinary medical facility for Hampton, improving patient outcomes, integrating and streamlining services, enhancing efficiencies, providing training opportunities and improving overall patient experience resulting in a highly innovative model of care for local residents.”

The proposed centre is strategically located to serve the Hampton population effectively and is positioned near other essential services and amenities. As part of the development, it is expected to generate 40 full-time equivalent jobs, contributing positively to the local economy. Additionally, the plans include 44 parking spaces to accommodate both staff and visitors.

The decision regarding the planning application will be made by the city council planners at a later date, which will determine the future of healthcare services in the area.
